way back in the 70's early 80's Allen Truehauft was working on getting 200 hp out of a 1600 he built a 62x92 motor that turned 9500 rpm but only achived 198 so he sold it to a friend of mine cheap. it was a screamer tho.

I will also add it had a bunch of crank case pressure :D

Howdy guys! I am finally starting in on this build, i have some money set aside, i will be out at the junkyard looking at the VW cars/busses out there.

What vehicle should i look for to get the good case/transmission for this???

tegwin Mon Mar 03, 2014 8:36 am

I GOT A MOTOR!!! Paid $200 for this baby cheaper than the junkyard, it's $300 and I pull it from the thing, in sand and nasty crap haha

If this motor has anything cool on it, I would love to know!

Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean??

AH case is a later dual relief case so you are good there as long as it hasn't been line bored out to oblivion.

I'm sure its stock inside. Get to ripp'in!

tegwin Mon Mar 03, 2014 2:33 pm

I am going to pull it apart and see what all is done to it, is there anything I should look out for?

GEX stamps

I did a google and its heads??

I plan on putting new heads with massive valves and what not lol

AlteWagen Mon Mar 03, 2014 4:27 pm

GEX is a high output engine "rebuild" company known for their low quality/questionable builds. Both heads and cases may be stamped, stickers were used on cases at some point.

If you see any GEX stamps you really have to inspect the parts for usability.

ahh, ok, I will keep a look out for anything with that on it.

How about water meth kit? Been doing a lot of research. If it's legal for you it may be worth it.

Danwvw Mon Mar 03, 2014 8:29 pm

It's always fun to get a VW engine and take it apart and see what you have. Usually if they turn over there is reason to hope it's a good case and perhaps even the crankshaft will still be good! I need to read your previous post here to get more info on what it is your doing before I can post anything further.
Does that chrome 36 hp style dog-house style fan have all of the same louvers etc as the OEM dog-house?

didget69 Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:34 pm

Meth? Didn't 'Breaking Bad' teach us anything about the evils of that?

I shall go follow that build thread!

STATS ON THE 1641 ( This motor ran a best of 13.79sec)
AS41 case
69x87
web 118
1.25 rockers total lift of .415 at the valve.
35x32 valves with dual springs.I did all the porting.
the compreshion was set at 12.5
110gas
stock crank,rods,presher plate and disk.
lightend flywheel.
stock gerbox 4.12 i do not use 4th
the Kadrons are stock with no changes.I did remove the air cleaners
The 1641 liked to rev.In the burn out box I would hit 8,000rpm's all the time.
leve the light at 7,200 to 7,400 and shift at the same.
103hp at 6,200rps.not bad

The above is from AJ Sims site: his motor when he was getting started...the 13.79 was in a 1/4 (and yes he spelled pressure and a few other words wrong) but this 1641 still a runner

Sooner or later the cc will be bumped up and I'll be able to build a nasty motor, it went from 1200, to 1600. If it goes to 1800, 4 cylinder buggies watch out loli would love to go fast enough in the buggy I'm building to keep up/beat the 470 merc. 4 banger that had a power glide, I'm excited about this build. I tried turning the crank but the compression was a lot lol don't have a lot of leverage to turn the crank on the ground lol

I was surprised how lie the motor is...I lifted it by my self lol my old motor I was lucky to move the bare block haha

Not sure, but the fan spins freely, and had a built in oil cooler (same as factory?)

I'm throwing around the idea of a electric clutch, I am not sure how well it would work, or if it would work at all...

I know drag racing has a thing where you press the clutch in, press a button and it holds the clutch open until you let go on the button, this would be amazing if it could be adapted for the transaxle, any ideas?? bad idea? any chance of it working??

edit: Now, would a big 4 barrel holley work?? I can slap on a huge carb if so, I am not sure if these motors came with a 4 barrel option for aftermarket stuff... I will be running the straight off road exhaust, it will also be mid ship mounted!

I took off the chrome housing, and the inside has fins to direct air flow, I don't like chrome...I may sell it and find a factory one, unless there is a bigger aftermarket one???

vugbug68 Tue Mar 04, 2014 6:35 pm

can you run dual carbs in your class? 40 idf's would be like a 4 barrel carb but waaay better for a vw, AH is a good case for sure, looks like you got a good deal

I can run what ever carb I want, what is the biggest VW flat 4?? after winning a few seasons of air cooled. I want to move into 4cyl, 250CI, roughly 4100cc motor

"The only carburetor that will be used is one Holley, 750 CFM or smaller. The maximum acceptable throttle bore will be 1 11/16"this includes the two barrel."
