Thank you. Bus has been a lot of fun and we have been racking up the miles.

Hi Brett, hats off for tackling and documenting the build. Im late to the party but I just read the whole thread start to finish. Threads like this prove that regular guys like the majority of us here can do it if you put your mind to it and get after it. Good job and hope I can see it at BB.

I appreciate the kind words. Many thanks to the build threads here on TheSamba that helped and motivated me to tackle such a puzzle.

Hi all, It’s been awhile since my last post.
The lil 1600 gave out due to shop towels in the fan.
From the beginning I’ve always planned on going back to Wide5 lug pattern and a engine and transaxle upgrade. A mild 2100 Type4 and prostreet transaxle has always been the plan power upgrade.

Rat #102 DTM came on an older low mileage engine I bought to freshen up. Exhaust studs were loose when I started the tear down to a short block. In the end everything was super clean with no visible wear and exhaust studs seemed to torque up properly. Hopefully new heads will not be in the future. Custom exhaust is on loan till new stainless A1 Sidewinder header is delivered.

I was as able to score a Benco turbo prostreet transaxle from a friend Jose. Thanks Jose

Time for brake upgrade, decided to go with Wagenswest BusStang brakes with
KONI adjustable shocks all around.

And of corse the four things that started all this Chadd Magee fabbed up
A set of custom offset OG SprintStar centers in new hoops.

My friend Jon rebuilt my early straight leg flipper seat, I’m working on springs and will cover with new covers I bought a few years ago when I purchased front and rear seat covers.

Bus is looking great, love the SA Sprints on there.

I purchased a straight leg middle seat with the intent to rebuild.

Short on time I sent frame to be repaired, As alway it’s more than predicted.
Jonathan Drury did a outstanding job repairing frame to original spec cutting up a nice $700 later full middle seat.

I’m at a standstill due to originally needing only a few springs to replacing 80 percent of the springs .

Had a rusty short middle seat I was able to source 40 percent of springs on the right side and completed the first two rows at the front to what’s left of the prongs on left side.
Im ready to give up after investing $2000 into the project.

I placed a wanted add for a complete spring assembly.

not cheap, but here ya go!

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2163211

i have the same middle seat project coming up soon. mine was in a fire bus, so all the backrest springs have lost their temper. i can buy couch S springs on Amazon that match the same wire gauge. I will be going that route, then powdercoating.

good luck.

Navydave73 Fri Jul 01, 2022 11:11 am

funny but not funny.....we both could have saved time by buying this and modifying the slant leg.
