I would like some advice on the advantages of an MSD set up over a 009, and would my engine benefit ?

would a MSD set up work any better than the 009 set I have at the moment what benefits would I see.

As you can probably tell I am quite ignorant on this but would like anyone's opinions before I go and empty my wallet on something that may look nice and sound good to say what I have!!!

my engine spec
2110
FK8 cam
44 idfs
9:1 cr
009 !!!

runs nice but it has not had a lot of use

thanks Garry

Get a Bosch 010 mechanical.

The aftermarket 09s are crap and the MSD might look cool, but is no the best option. I have a 2180, FK8, IDAs, 9.5 and a 010 and it runs great.

Thanks Glenn
I will look for one , they seem hard to find in the UK but I will keep my eyes peeled and give one ago.

The only advantage the MSD has it will be easier to start the car when it is cold outside. The MSD will not increase the power at all. Leave the MSD for the track racers.

You will get better MPG with an SVDA distributor.

But not better performance. The "034" SVDA is for a smog carb.

I run a 009 in a 2084, and had 009 in 2180, and never needed anything like MSD box to help performance....Good 009 with electronic point module will do you just fine...

If your Webers do not have vacuum ports, you are stuck with mechanical advance distribuitor ...Even with vacuum port, vacuum advance distibuitor use may be questionable....

If you want the ultimate in ignition control, go with programable crank fire system...

I was looking at one of the aircooled dot net SVDA distributors. Since i have dual weber 40 idf's this wouldnt be a good distributor? Right now i have a 009 with petronix points conversion.

yes get the msd dist, or the CB "copy cat" dist(CB's billet dist. IMHO 010 is crap. and in reality no diferent that the 09 you have execpt for the price. they can both be recurved but nowhere as eazy or user freindly as the msd style dist. click click the can of worms is open and there fixen to start craling around.

Mark, have you ever tried a 019?

Is it a German 009? Look at the bottom and see if it says German stamp on it.

I have a 2110,FK-10,IDA,...
I use to have a complete MSD systeme on it.
I changed to my 010 that is now at the moment on it because i had a bad magnetic pick-up with the MSD.
The only real difference that i feel is that is started better with the MSD and the idle was a bit more constant.
Also when the MSD fails you are stranded and with the 009 or 010 it is easier to fix on the road if you have some parts with you.
I will put the MSD back in my car once it is fixed because i have it now.
But i will not buy one for the future engine in my bus.

Henk!!!

the msd style is oh so eazy and fast to recurve . weather it be the msd or the cb billet or petronix billet or whatever the name on that type of dist with the entire addvance system on top not under the breaker plate. if your running a msd and it stops ...it's stoped. if your running a 010 and the trigger stops...it's stoped unless your one of those guys thats allways readt for the inferrior parts to crap out. I my self carry no extra parts with me and for the past 70000+ miles havent needed to.only one road side issue and that was the break switch exploiding.I gess I should carry a spair car with me. Build it right build it one tyme break it in right and be done and forget about it.

ok I have just managed to pick up a genuine bosch 009 and would like to use it .
do I need to alter anything for my engine set up before I fit it .

Glenn Tue Jul 12, 2016 5:09 am

Put it in an let us know how it compares to the aftermarket 009 you have.

mark tucker Tue Jul 12, 2016 1:23 pm

try it. the recurve it if you want to. this is where the MSD style is so much better, fast &eazy to recurve in the car.

I run an MSD distributor, and like Mark said, you can change everything with a click. Very simple to change. The instructions with it show a graph to show what every change will do.

Comparing points ignition to something like MSD is like comparing a Bic lighter to a thunderbolt. The stock ignition is fine for stock or near stock applications, but when your twisting your VW's tail past 6 grand or so, your asking the stone age points to do something they were never meant to do. I have used a Compufire type pickup in a 010 or 009, a rotor without a resistor, and a 6AL MSD box, 2 step rev control with a Blaster coil......it paid for itself with what the rev limiter did for me on several occasions (missed shifts) and in every occasion at launch time. I don't know how one could do it otherwise.

I like stone age bosch points, Gerrman 009 and blue coil...6200 rpm, no problem. And engine setup is beyond stock. Used pertronics and compufire, but engine feels more snappy with the stone age parts.

I guess you could just use the points bounce and/or float for a rev limiter.
