I wouldent recomend commt as you may not be able to get it all out untill the engine starts.... I also like a fine hone. IMHO 180-280 is too rough and will just wear parts out, raise oil temps, and imbed crap into the skirts. but if you knock the peaks off it may be ok....for somebody. |

I'm not endorsing it, I'm just telling you the situations that it helped. Specific solution to a specific problem with an acknowledged downside. |

If you still have some on the parts after using it, you were rushing and didn't rinse it properly.
Comet and hot water clean the parts far better than anything else in my experience.
Does your cereal taste like soap? If so, slow the eff down.
I did not misunderstand it John, they would actually sprinkled Comet it the carb with the engine running to speed up the break in. Our high school automotive teacher used it as an example of shady things that some less than qualified mechanics did. I can't imagine what that would do to the rest of the engine! |

I haven't had any REAL ring problems in over 5 years, which is.....well I don't count, but it's many hundreds of engines.
There was a comeback, but no conclusion can be made, because it was a novice receiving a lot of help, and no idea what really happened.
Possibly what happened is they thought the rings were not sealing, and did "something", and whatever that ahem, "something" was, it caused extreme wear to the sides of the ring. It may also have been fuel wash. I talked to a number of experts about it, and nobody really had a definite answer of how it's possible to trash the rings in this manner.
The problem I was able to identify was it had used heads, and the valve guides were totally shot, so it would have been emitting a fair amount of smoke no matter the condition of the rings
So, the moral of the story is...... I don't know. Crowbar in sandbox? or
Don't do, any of that. |
