Got a 2387 high comp Sandrail eng with a Holley red and a Holley
regulator. Looking for a good reliable regulator to install.
The Holley reg I have won't keep steady pressure, I took it apart twice.
It all looks good inside
This is what I have right now, was told these are junk anyways.

Malpassi Filter King on all my engines...

I'm running this one with my holley red.. it's been able to keep pressure at 3.5psi alright..

That one from aircooled looks good, I'm gonna check the other one out also.

I have 3 of those regulators on different motors. No problems here. Those red pumps put out a lot. If I used one of those I would run 2 regs. One to get pressure lower and one to fine tune. You try a low pressure rebuild kit? Maybe your spring is toast. Who said they were junk? I’ve heard the opposite, especially for their price.

Aircooled one might not fit your hoses. You will also need a T.
Stupid question, you have inlet on correct spot?

Make sure you have the 1-4 PSI regulator. You DO NOT want the 4-9 PSI regulator. It should have a red spring inside. I have never had a problem with using them on my VW's

I've been using and recommending the Quickfuel technologies low pressure regulator for a few years. Installed three, and know a few people running them also, only one issue and the company stepped up and fixed it ASAP. No issues with either a high or low volume pump.

Your trying to regulator pressure to keep the flow down on a pump that is designed to run at flow levels 5 times that of our VW's. fyi its always gonna be a issue, even with a 2387.

Even at 3.5 PSI the Holley Red is trying to force 50 Gallons per hour through the regulator. In other words, your using a 10 horsepower Pool pump to fill your bathtub, but you have cheap $30 restrictor so you don't flood your house in 2 seconds.

I would get a pump designed to flow at VW levels and not worry about trying to restrict it down 500%

Re-configure the fuel system to be a loop style like an EFI motor.

-Install a "T" fitting on the IN port of the regulator. The "T" needs to be installed so the fuel flow from the pump and into the reg passes through the straight legs of the "T". Make sense??
-Run fuel hose from pump to the "straight" leg of the "T" on the regulator.
-Run fuel hose from the OUT on the regulator back to the fuel tank
-Run fuel hose from the "90* leg" of the "T" to the carbs
-Install pressure gauge on fuel hose that feeds carbs.

In this setup the regulator provides a restriction on the hose back to the tank. As this restriction goes up, the pressure BEFORE the regulator (where the carbs are plumed in) goes UP. As the restriction goes down, the pressure to the carbs goes down. The added benefits are the pump will run much cooler and quieter also.

The Holly red pump is only rated at 97 gallons per hour. It is not too big for a 2387. I've run the red fuel pump & 1-4 PSI regulator on my drag race Dunebuggy for over 20 years without any issues.

The cheap Faucet fuel pumps put out 40 gallons per hour.

50 gallons per minute would be a huge pump for a serious V-8 race engine

This one can handle all you throw at it. I run one on a turbo motor with a efi pump. It has a return circuit. That's the only way to keep pressure constant with an overkill pump.
Just don't use the boost line. Put a plug in it.

I got a migraine LOL.
This whole engine project started out with me getting the buggy
to just sync his carbs, $8000 parts and labor later its been one thing after another, I think this is my last bump in the road.
Yes. I would be doing the fuel system differently. But I think I will be looking into
One of these reg's, and also looking into a fuel pump to eliminate the regulator completely.
What (Good) fuel pump would be rec to run the 3 to 3.5 lbs without a regulator.

My typo. I meant 50 gallons per hour. The holly red is rated at 97 mph at 7psi, restricted down to 3.5 psi it's gonna be at 50 gph. Still overkill. Glad it worked for you in your race car, but my experience is any driving distance it's running hot fighting itself. I have had them overheat and stop working.

I prefer Holley 426 and no regulator cause it's sized properly.

mcdragracer Wed Oct 25, 2017 10:03 pm

What's the output pressure on that 426 Holley?

Ditto...im curious also

Holley 426 is 4Psi. They are good pushers. I run this close to the tank with no regulator and by the time it gets through 2 filters and to the engine its 3 PSI. It rated at 25GPH.

$48

I like the looks of it and its made in the good old USA.
I think I'm sold on it.

Top centre of the fan shroud... Filter and regulator in one, glass bowl so you have no worries of engine fires. Reusable filter element... What's not to like... I'll grab a picture

Thanx!
