Took you awhile to learn but your glad you did, right?

 true actually! Its not that it is complex at all. Just a little finicky and takes a steady hand and the right set up.

I like what RWK suggested. I will try that.

As I noted...I have a pair of snap on nylon centering guides I made that pop into anvil and spindle on a mic that allow you to actually rest the dial bore gauge while its centered in the mic in a micrometer stand and you fiddle with the gauge face.

I will snap a picture of them in the am.

A die making machinist at a plant ai worked in had a cool set up. On his work bench jig plate....he had a pair of rubber tipped lock over clamps and a pair of machined stand offs of about 5/8" height......and a little fence made of flat stock screwed to the plate.

They were set up so he could set the micrometer.....lay it on the two stand offs.....clamp the micrometer down....and then stand the dial bore gauge vertical and square on the jig plate with its side against the fence so it was square to the micrometer. It was a snap setting up his dial bore gauge....like ine minute or less.

I have a nice 1 foot square by 1/2" thick granite surtace plate ai am thinking of doing something similar with. Ray

That's fine too. No wrong way.

I don't tie my shoes everyday, found an easier way  But still glad I know how, if I had to

for me it's not hard, I just dial bore gauge the mic real good and know where the needel go's to and then set the zero there and repeat for a final adjustment.then check 1 more time it's usualy dead on. it was a lot eazer when both my hands worked good, but I still get the same results, just a tad more fiddeling. on that note I have been thinking about making a violin lately

If you have boots with hooks(clips) like this, the shoelace can be pulled off the hooks, leave it tied. As they say, procedure to re-install is the reverse of disassembly.

I tried my Fowler (Chinese) bore gauge with the transfer rod spring removed as Mr. Greenwood suggested. Much smoother, I like it. For the price it's a pretty nice piece for a hobbyist. I try to get good Mitu's, Starrett, B&S off E-bay when I can. Just snagged an immaculate Mitu 571 series Digimatic 8" digital depth gauge for $65 vs 375+ new. :D
