The machine shop that did my heads showed me a difference between the two. One of them has a raised ring at the cylinder mating surface:

The engine that these heads came from was running well prior to disassembly. Do I need additional parts for reassembly ie: spacer rings or anything or reassemble as it came apart?

Thanks for any help rendered.

You need to learn how to CC combustion chambers and check compression ratio if you're doing the work . You can do a search .

One head had the "step" cut out, or was manufactured without the step. If these are the same casting, you need to cut the step out of the one head and cc the Chambers to make sure they are the same.

If they are different castings, either make them as similar as possible, or get a matching set of heads.

They could be miss matched heads for example the one with the step is like a German VW head and the one without the step is Brazilian VW Head. Be good to have a machine shop match ie cc them or just find the right head or get new matching heads. Make sure someone didn't put in shims just under the cylinders on one side of the engine.
