Hey guys, Ive been working on my lil rat rod and finally got the engine to fire and it sounded great... for about 5 minutes.
1915cc, dual carbs... etc... (bosch 009)
anyway... we kept having a "timing" issue... Ive had the distributor in and out of the car about a hundred times at this moment and NOTHING has changed it. Basically, the distributor drive is pushing upwards and "out" of the block.
we took it all apart again and it all appears to be fine. Pulled the distributor drive, had the right amount of shims etc. put it all back together and again, same issues... repeat this a ton more times and its still and issue.
looking into a "scrap" (blown motor) motor i have access to and I can see the distributor drive gear on it crankshaft is damn near right in the middle of the opening from the fuel pump locations when you look down into the block from above... when i look down through my new engine it seems the brass gear is further "forward" (towards the crank pulley) than in the other engine.
I went back through all the pics and videos ive taken of the engine build and it looks to me like EVERYTHING is in the exact right places and order... but the gear looks too far forward, which i dont understand. (there's a lock ring in front of the brass gear so i cant see it moving forwards.)
when i install my distributor drive and 009 back into the block and turn the engine by hand the distributor doesnt always spin with the motor, which im sure is why were were having such bad time with the timing issues.
its spinning is intermittent and i cannot for the life of me figure it out.... i mean really, wtf....?
Anyone seen similar things? or have any ideas that i can run with... it doesnt seem to "seat" into the gear correctly. (although both gears appear to be fine and are a part of a fresh rebuild.) |

Weird, the drive gets pulled down when the engine is running. That's why you need the shims. |

Distributor drive clamp bent? Not sitting flush on the case? Aftermarket?
Brass gear could be bad also |

Maybe the distributer is just barely engaged into the drive. I'd measure to make sure it has good engagement and make sure the distributer is fully seated.
If not that then the drive or the drive gear teeth may be broken but I would think that would cause the engine to lock up. |

First, how does the drive move up with the fuel pump rod pushing down on it?
Agree with the brass gear being suspect. Seen a few get machined by the old drive gear. Look at the spine of each gear. If it is a razor edge, there is some brass missing! |
