Hello everybody I was hoping to get some input/knowledge on a used motor that I was looking at. A friend of mine offered to sell me a used 2110.It is complete with dual carbs. Unfortunately he does not know the history of it. He picked it up from somebody that was doing a Honda swap in a Baja bug. I plan on doing a leak down and compression test before I buy it. I had a couple of questions and was hoping to get some insight. It has a external spin on oil filter that is on the left side down low. I believe it is in the similar location as a type 4 Is this a simple adaptor bolt on part that somebody installed on a type 1? It also has a couple of lines coming out of the shroud that are routed to a oil cooler which is mounted in front of the shroud (back of motor) any thoughts on this type of external cooler? I was thinking that it would be a simple solution to extend the lines and put a external cooler with a shrouded fan that is in fresh air. Is there any way to confirm piston size without removing the heads? I plan on taking off the valve covers, and intake manifolds and checking for porting and head type. Thanks for your I sight and advice. |

The filter is a filter/pump and a very common aftermarket add on.
The oil cooler in the front of the fan intake is a bad idea since it pre-heats the air that cools the engine. |

Bare in mind that the previous owner was not happy with how it ran so has gone the engine swap route. As with used cars there is always a reason they are for sale. You may have a good engine that just needs a proper tune or you may have a collection of badly matched abused parts. It's a gamble!
Judging by the fact that you didn't recognize that very common oil filter mod, I would say your knowledge of VW air cooled engines is pretty limited. If you could find someone with some old VW background to take along next time you look at it, he just might save you some surprises. |
