So we got the trunk cleaned up and tank in in the last few months.

Got the tank back in this weekend and went to start it.

Still wouldn’t start. I dug a little deeper. I could tell it was. Timing issue. Walked over to the parts car and it hit me.

TDC on the parts car:

TDC on her car:

I had indexed the gear off by one tooth. Pulled it out, reiindexed it, and it fired right up.

Now I have to put the dash back together. When we bought the car literally nothing electrical worked on it. I’ve slowly been going through the electrical system and cleaning it up. The speedo cable was missing. Replaced it. Fixed the clock. The fuel gauge didn’t work. Replaced it, the sender, the headlight switch, wiper switch, ignition switch, and a whole list of other issues. But the end, thank god, is in sight.

Started working on the column today. It’s powder coated and I got a new ISP west switch for it. Going to pull the lock cylinder out of the original and put it in the new switch. Got some soldering to do. Fun fun.

That came today. Correct 67 generator. Getting cleaned up and going in this weekend.

Generator is in. Car finally charges its own battery. It never had. When we bought it the charging system didn’t work. Silly me thought that was the least of the issues and and easy fix. It’s fixed now. Bought a good used correct for 67 generator, replaced the regulator, and added a ground wire. With the shroud being powder coated, it needed its own ground.

Spent about 30 mins on the column today. Got the wires run and it’s partially assembled. Still have to solder it together and finish putting the turn signal switch together. But at least I have some progress.

Didn’t have much time before it got dark after I got home from work today, but I managed to cut this little patch to fill the hole the PO made in the dash for the aftermarket ignition switch. Hopefully I’ll get home tomorrow in time to weld it in, and then get it painted Thursday. It’s supposed to be 76 degrees Thursday. Warm enough to paint. Then after that it’s going to turn cold, so I may have to bring it in the garage overnight and leave the Ghia and Thing out while it dries.

The patch

Paint I had made to match the car

But when does the new album come out?

Nice work, nice car.

Thank you very much.

Also, as of a few months ago, Mike Ness was undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

So I finally finished assembling the column. Thanks to Lionel Mendoza for the help on which wire is which on the ISP switch. Put it in the car temporarily to test everything. I’m going to pull the switches, weld the patch in where the dash was cut, and paint the dash before it’s all said and done. Also, the wiring on this car was an absolute mess. Wires cut and spliced with no connections or solder, just taped together, that were constantly hot and not fused. I’ve been cleaning up and replacing as I go, using the correct color and gauge as the original.

Good work! When working with wiring under dash and steering column I found it much easier to remove the driver's seat and lie down on the floor.

Cleaned the wiring up a little more today. Going to need a new flasher relay. This one has seen better days.

Last pic is the hot wire coming off of the flasher relay. I replaced it with one that isn’t spliced.

Also, I should probably use a heavier gauge for the ground.

Did a little more cleanup on the wiring today after work. I finally managed to get the fuel gauge to work. It has never worked since we bought the car. I now have all the instruments working. None of them did the day we bought it. Even the clock works now.

Got a little work done on the car this weekend.

Did some powder coating

Here you can see where I added a ground wire to the sending unit. Also, the powder coated tank hold down clamps.

Started cleaning up the engine cover.

You're good, that is just to help provide a reference for the voltage regulator. No significant current is transferred from the generator through physical contact. The later beetles used a 1.0mm2 ground wire there which is between 16 and 18AWG.

Also also, thanks for introducing me to social distortion!! It's a real throwback to the 90s and I'm thoroughly enjoying them! :D
Get your wife in that car! If she likes it enough to be out there helping and cleaning it, she must really want to start driving it!!

Normally you’re correct. Except, I powder coated both the shroud, and the strap. So that is the only connection the generator has for a ground. Probably will still be ok, but I’d feel better with a thicker gauge there. Or I could just clean the powder coat off the shroud below the generator. No one will ever see it.

Yes, social distortion has been a favorite since the 90s. Grew up in LA listening to them on KROQ. They played their acoustic Christmas 4 or 5 years ago when my wife and I were in LA. I really wanted to go, but we didn’t make it. The next day we were at a Rams game, and I heard one of the security guys who worked the concert the night before telling his coworker how great it was. Really wish I’d gone.

I also enjoy SD!

Thank you very much.

This car is the wife’s 3rd VW. She bought another type 3 a few years ago that was just too far gone to save. It was also an automatic, and she wanted a stick. She also owns a 73 Thing she’s had since 2011. It’s a running driving work in progress. She’s also helped me do quite a bit of work to it, including installing new pans back in 2012.
