View original topic: Who do you use to ship a fender? Page: 1, 2  Next

I need to ship a fender.

The box is big at 44x24x24.

The shipping quotes I am getting are nearly 400 dollars which makes it not worth the cost.

Any suggestions on shipping providers?

I think that due to the size of the box this fender gets a surcharge and then of course there is the high price of fuel being passed along.

Thanks in advance!

And you should see the inside of the truck it is shipped in.....almost empty. It is a sign of the times. Others may come on here and say use this company or that but they all are pricey. Your $400 OFFER to ship those fenders is about NORMAL today with the surcharge for fuel. You are going to have to wait this thing out....if it gets any better. Shipping is terrible, as it turns out, somebody is subsidizing Amazon!

Haven't used it myself, but have heard of others using Greyhound bus line (GBX) to ship larger items. They have an online quote tool. You might check them out.

Funny since I shipped an entire exhaust system with heater boxes, muffler, header that weighed close to 45lbs in early Jan and it was just $60 or so coast to coast.

5 months later it is $300 more!

You can never get anybody on the phone and when you do better be careful that the place you ship from and to is still open! The online quote tool is a joke. Unless you have it exact....I mean exact, it will be more. I learned this the hard way, shipping fenders that were 1/2 inch longer and 3/4 inch wider and 10 pounds more. Cost me an additional $114 . And they gave me alot of crap for it! GBX is the worst, now I live in a big metropolitan area, and the closest GBX is almost 100 miles to the north. They have closed MANY freight terminals down lately. Hope you find out differently and they arent that rude to you.

We could do a better job here of Milgram shipping large things by passing them from member to member for nominal gas cost. Find people headed your way who travel, then set it up.

Greyhound is the last gasp for shipping anything large. It works, it may take awhile, damage is rare. Purchase a Veterans Advantage card and save 25%. Most terminals no longer answer phones and there is no way to talk to anyone at corporate directly. The greyhound locater will provide fairly accurate information on which terminals still accept freight. I doubt this will last much longer as greyhound seeks to kill all terminals and go 100% digital where you wait at a stop and hope for the best. In the 25 of shipping parts I have never seen rates go back down...despite whatever excuses are presented. You can get that fender underway for about $125, hurry hurry as rates change very fast.

maybe not a fender but you can ship fastenal store to fastenal store on a pallet

you can also go through a broker. I ship bike parts through a bike shipping broker. There are similar brokers previously talked about in the past here like parcel money

The issue with Fastenal is. They break the US into two halves. Once your shipment gets halfway across the US. That's the end of the journey.
They don't hand off shipments from the west to the east. And visa versa.

I have twice successfully posted a thread here on TheSamba asking for anyone going from point x to point y or as close as possible and it worked out both times.

I used these folks to help get a car shipped to me.
Worked out very well.
They do large parcels.

I've also used CL rideshare with great success in the past. CL is kind of dying so that may not work so well now. I hesitate to bring this up but...FB marketplace or user groups? I know its a toxic hell hole but it may be an avenue. Some sort of uber type package service is long over due and I am amazed no tech startup has entered this market. It would be easier than passengers. Drivers roaming about pick up items and deliver them to a "hosts" garage, once a critical mass has been reached city to city drivers collect the bundle and deliver to another host. End users retrieve items from the host or pay a bit extra for door to door delivery. With high gas prices you could enlist an army in no time and without the pressure of ridiculous corporate profit be very competitive.

How much business is NOT happening due to the shipping situation?
