today I pulled my motor..I was surprised to see my flywheel with worn teeth facing the pressure plate. not sure how this happened..must have been before my ownership..I never had an issue...should I replace it......What might have caused this...I do not see any damage on the starter gear.......

| A worn out starter bushing can cause this to happen. I had the exact same issue when I bought my car. I replaced it with a new flywheel because it started to get noisy on crank ups. |

| toxicavenger70 thanks for getting back to me.....will replace the flywheel yes...looking at my starter there is only the gear and no nose shaft....so i don't need to replace the bushing..am i correct? Thanks Matt |

Looks like you have a self supporting starter. So you should be good to go. |

I think I'd just use grease on the flywheel teeth and starter teeth when I re-installed.
If you get a new flywheel, then you'll have to deal with adjusting the end play most likely.
Your starter is the autostick type self-supported type, fine. |

If it's not grinding I would leave it be.
I had an engine with bad teeth on the flywheel, so bad that when the engine stopped on the worst spot I would have to turn it a few degrees by hand so I could start it. Since an 4 cylinder almost always stops in the same two positions, and since I was broke, I was able to fix the problem by removing the flywheel and turning it 90 degrees. |

I mentioned lubricating the flywheel teeth with some kind of dry lube on the HBB forum. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=776544
It was not widely accepted! The most common reason for not doing it that I found in my research is "because we ain't never done it thatway afore so why start now"? I'm not going to use grease but will use some type of dry lube, probably motorcycle chain lube. Non sticky, won't fling off and lubes pretty well. |

if it's just a four dowel, turn it 90 degrees to even out the wear.
Might have been chewed up by a bad starter gear. |

| it looks like the starter teeth are too shallow. Is that the original style starter, or did someone swap it for one that doesn't require the bushing. |
