Long time since my last update!
I have decided to sell my straight axle setup an go the IRS way.
there are several pro and con's but in my opinion IRS is way to go for me..
The bolt on brackets for beetle IRS are not an option.. the MOT doesn't allow this here in Belgium so the only that was left is the Creative Engineering Bay window bus kit. These require to cut the OG frame horns and weld in their ones. but CE doesn't make these anymore so i started to gather some parts.
i did managed to find the frame horns seperately aswell as the shock mount brackets. (it think i bought the very last brackets available)
started to remove the old stock shock mounts:
Bolted the new ones in:
next up, cut the OG framehorns:
Triple meausered where the CE horns need to come,
U can find the manual for this conversion online, it's really obvious and easy!
Since i actually need everything from an early bay window and parts for that are so hard to find, i am gonna take the control arms from an early bay (which i had layin around) an use the rest from a late bay bus and fabricate some things myself.
needed to make my own spring plates using stock split bus front piece and late bay rear piece:
meausured and tack weld it:
fits perfect!
Fully welded the CE framehorns:
really happy with the way things going!
More to come! |

Nice. I’ve been doing some research on this combination rear setup. Concerning the springplate- is there not any reason to not use the stock 68-70 springplate ? |

Nope.. but they are so hard to find here in Belgium/Europe
The only thing what my manual says is that the all of the spring plates (CE, early bay and late bay) have 48 splines..
I don't know how many splines a stock splittie has but my late bay spring plates were too big for my torsion bars..
I had a few split bus and late bay spring plates laying around so i weld them together with a 370mm length
Also there's a mistake in the manual i think.. it should be 68-69 and not 68-89 |

Oh dear, the MOT in Belgium. I hope they don't complain.
You make things safer and better and they say "NO" ](*,) |

After i made a mistake with the undercoating it began to peel of..
What a headache to get few steps back, but there was no other choice then take everything back off and start all over..
My fault whas that i used 1k brunox rust convertor and epoxy and then put a 2k epoxy over that.. there was no good bond between the two :x
So everyrhing had to go back to bare metal and i decided to go for a raptor liner epoxy and undercoating:
10 times better then the previous in my opinion.. wish i had it done the first time :? Still learning everyday!
Now just let it cure for a couple off days and start to rebuild again! |

Sanblasted all of the IRS parts and relocated the brake line bracket on the control arm so it doesn't get in the way of the frame horn..
Primed everything in epoxy and painted it black!
Also made custom brake lines for the new setup.
Next up is pull the bus out of the rotisserie and start building things up!
Keep u updated! |

Yeah that's the advantage of needing a lot of new panels..
And that is why i decided to panel bond some panels, so it just needs a skim coat of filler to make it straight |

i always liked the deluxe trim on a bus so now it is the perfect time to fit!
when finished i am gonna sand an paint the inside myself, i am not a pro but the cargo area gets fully covered by the so42 westfalia interior and the dash/visible metal gets a good buff and polish so its gonna look nice!
more updates to come! |
