Type 4 engine, custom built, 2nd owner. So, replacing my breather box hoses. I remove the barb connected to the engine case and see something through hole. It looks like honeycomb, possible sponge. I stick a small screw driver inside to touch it and it breaks apart. It is so brittle. I put some on my fingers and when rubbed together it disintegrates. What is it? Should it suck it out with a tiny vacuum? Or just leave it?

Open cell foam by the looks of what came out. Someone dammed it in there for use as an oil separator. |

Prolly won't be an issue unless it's disturbed. Put the fitting in and forget about it until you split the case. |

Most likely a chunk of this stuff.
More common in motorcycle engines, known as breather foam or sponge, or sometimes oil trap sponge. |

I would pull the fan off and the adaptor block and remove it . Not hard to do. |

I for sure would remove it. I am selling my Shields in the U.S and Europe because the guys are worried about levees and dust. Cleaner the better you don't need it getting loose and clogging something.. Murphy's Law, if something can go wrong it will. |
