| I have a 65 Bug looking to buy a 1776cc engine with a two barrel carb and a freeway flyer transmission. Approximately, how much horse power can I expect? Is it best to get the freeway flyer trans because I plan to drive long distances? |

Zero to a hundred? (horsepower)
Seriously, there are a ton of factors that contribute to output specifically cam, compression ratio and heads. All heads are not created equal. And... if you're running a two barrel carb, we discussed this the other day. Stock dual port end castings limit your engine to 74 horsepower.
Lotta builders think they can get away with a 110 cam and a single carb.
My rule of thumb is less than 270 degrees advertised duration with a single carb. You're only making 74 horsepower anyway.
The stock 4.37 diff in a '65 works fine. It has worked fine for millions of old VWs. It may not work as well as it could in near 100 degree heat on a freeway full of California lunatics in an all- fired rush to get somewhere. Seriously. Where are they all going? What's the hurry to get there?
'68 is the transmission to have with its 4.12 differential.
4.37 always worked for me especially on twisty secondary roads.

With a bigger engine I would recommend adding louvers to the engine lid for both cooling and air entrance, or using lid stand-offs or the tennis ball trick. The solid 1965 engine lid is fine for stock 40hp engines but not for bigger engines.
I run an 1835cc engine in a 1971 with a 2-vent engine lid from a 1970 sedan, and I use lid stand-offs. I have the stock transmission, has never been out of the VW. Here's what it looked like with that engine in my 1970 sedan.

Thanks Dusty and Cusser for your reply. I like to take long drives on the many Southern California back roads in Malibu (PCH) and San Diego. With the sunroof open and nice winding roads are the reason I went to the 1776cc. I do have lid stand-offs to help cool the engine because most days, it's sunny and hot when I do drive, unless I'm on the coastal roads.
This helped a lot! |
