FastyOrange wrote: If you want to run the late model crankcase breather setup, you need the correct IAD and the correct heads (i.e. late heads with the breather ports). The easiest cylinder head port to find is on the passenger side. Pull your air cleaner off and look down at the cooling tin next to the spark plugs at the back of the motor on that side. You should see a cutout with either a hose running down through the tin or no hose but a breather port on the end of the head if you have the right heads. The other breather port is in the same position on the driver's side head, so it will be up near firewall. Passenger side shown below.

If you don't have the late heads, it may be easier to just swap the breather for the early style. It is my understanding that this will also work. Hopefully bobnotch or someone else can confirm that.

You also need to look at the fuel injection parts chart from the k manual shown below and compare the numbers on the chart to the parts on your car before you buy a bunch of parts.

Start there and see if you are even running the correct parts for your model year. You may have a different generation of FI installed...that is fine if the parts match.

Once you know these details you can start figuring out what you need and hopefully avoid buying a bunch of unnecessary parts...and we can better understand what you're working with and how to help when you have issues.

Yup, those were the ports I was talking about. Personally I'd just swap the breather box to the single cap version, and be done with it. Then you wouldn't need to change out the plenum or any of the other stuff. I do agree with keeping the FI parts within the same parts group (example A B C D or E) as the system does need to match. Granted there are a couple of places / spots where some bits do cross over. Some things like "C" or "D" MPS units do cross over, as do some distributors and throttle switches. Keep in mind the temp sensors do cross over thru the years, although there shapes changed (some are longer, but carry the same part number). You really need to find a list of the parts of the FI system that use the same parts numbers, like posted above. I hope this helps.

Awesome information, thanks guys!

I'll dig into it when I can and see what the part numbers are for the various F.I. equipment.

Cheers.

Doing some basic maintenance on a lazy day, I pulled off the rear taillight lense to check on a faulty blinker bulb.

Didn't know that the lenses were two separate pieces, LOL. Found a couple of replacements near by, should have them in hand soon.

Luckily the light bulb started working again after cleaning up the bulb housing and the contacts.

Turns out the driver’s side taillight lense is in worse shape, so I sourced a replacement locally.

Here’s the replacement lense as purchased.

And after a quick buff.

And finally installed on the pickle. It’ll do for now.

My throttle return spring is currently attached to one of the distributor cap side clamps, I know that can't be factory.

I've found some throttle return spring brackets for sale, thinking about grabbing one, but not exactly sure how/where it is mounted. I'm guessing to the top of the block somehow.

Anybody have a decent picture of one in place on the engine?

FastyOrange Fri Oct 03, 2025 12:20 pm

Forgive the image as my engine does not have the factory FI setup anymore. That bracket mounts with the AAR. I have it mounted to a block off plate in the same fashion. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jon, that's exactly what I was looking for.

When you find Type 3 parts that you need in the area you're working in, you stop and grab them, even when your work vehicle is a Toyota Corolla. :P

Front bumper in amazing shape complete with rubber strip and near perfect chrome plating. Plus a front beam assembly with bump-stops intact, just incase I decide to swap it out later.

Seller was happy to take payment in the form of a 30-pack of Coors Light, which I can respect. 8)

Did the seller have a story about the Type 3 from which those parts came?

Yes, I was also curious. He said he’d been working on a Bus project and had done some trading for parts, those were just part of the stash, but his Wife did drive a type 3 back in the day. 8)

Ya gotta love chrome plating from the time before the EPA snowflakes messed it all up. It’s cleaning up nicely. Next step is to clean up the small amount of surface rust inside the bumper, then coat it with a converter/protector combination.

That bumper really cleaned up nice. I agree with about the chrome plating of yesteryear, it was so much better.

Got it out of the garage and rolled around the block as it began to get dark.

All lights/signals functioning properly, except for the license plate light. I’ll have to trace the wiring, as I know the fixture and bulbs function properly since I took it out and cleaned it all up.

Power comes from the right tail light, then goes up the "D" post to the right upper hinge, then passes thru 2 grommets then drops inside the gate to the plate indent. For that part of the job, you might want to pop the vinyl coated board on the tail gate to access the wiring. I hope this helps.

Thankfully the rear hatch panel has not been installed, as I’d previously taken the entire light assembly off for cleaning. I’ll get into it this weekend.

Throttle return bracket installed. Had to flip the bolt around at the intake to position the spring correctly, guess the P.O. or his mechanic had it on wrong?

Definitely better than when the spring was attached to the clamp on the distributor cap.

Question: Does the throttle pedal have some sort of return spring inside the cabin? Guessing I'll need a new cable, but the pedal tends to stick at about 20% depressed without springing all the way back.

Only a very weak spring that keeps the pedal itself pressed against the roller. It puts negligible tension on the cable.

Make sure the carpet isn't trying to hold the throttle down. It's happened before to others including myself.

Wait, you mean to tell me these things came with carpet!?!?

LOL some day…. :P
