View original topic: Intermittent cylinder firing?

Just installed my friends backup motor in my car while I finish building my 2332(needs CB wedgeports and possible replace the 94s with tw92s).

It is a stock 1600 with a single 40idf, 009 with a new Pertronix unit & 3ohm flame thrower coil which I added. Friend said as he remembers the motor was running fine when he pulled it probably about 5yrs ago. Since my fuel plumbing has a electric pump under the tank I bypassed the stock fuel pump. Fuel pressure is regulated at 2psi. Significant oil leak on right side of motor that I believe are pushrod tubes. I did open up the carb to make sure there was no thrash or residue from old gas inside.
Here’s the problem I’m dealing with now. It is running on 3 cylinders and when I checked the exhaust headers…#1 is cold. When I pulled the wire from the distributor cap just far enough to see the arc jump that cylinder immediately kicked in & the header to #1 started heating up. When I start to insert the wire back into the cap #1 goes dead. I switched wires with #2 cylinder to see if it was a wire issue but the problem still only occurred on #1. I pulled the #1 plug and it was wet which I’m assume was from not igniting the fuel.
In addition I’m getting some backfiring and a large puff of black when I rev the motor.
Your thoughts?

Thanks

Your #1 plug is fouled. Letting the arc jump increases the voltage which will then jump the arc on the plug. This is an old trick to get a 2 stroke dirt bike back to the truck when it fouls the plug.

Ok I did not replace the plugs. To be safe I’ll pickup a new set and start from scratch.

Thanks
