Would appreciate any info about a used long block I picked up to replace a punctured-case engine, 1600 Dual port. My experience level is that, with help from you guys, I built a 1600 dual port for my 71 S. Beetle. Made me feel confident enough to pick up a new project car.
This engine came out of a replica of a Porsche. I had a glance at the engine when it was in the car and the engine top side was modified with something I’m ignorant of; large black blower-looking thing, (turbo charger, super charger?).
- The oil pump is missing and i see +1 marked on the cam. Reading up, I see that indicates backlash. What is the effect of this and will it affect the choice of oil pump or distributor I put in?
- There is a plate cemented over where the fuel pump should be. Was there some mod that replaces a traditional fuel pump?
- there are no deflector tins under the head cylinders. Will I have to pull the heads off to install them?
- looks like it has a sensor screwed into the case bottom front. Oil temp I assume.
Grateful for any insights

Cam is a stock cam, with a +1 gear. The gear is for backlash and has no effect on performance.
Must of had an electric fuel pump.
No lower tins... no bueno. Heads have to come off, replace the dented push rod tubes.
Sender must be a oil temp. |

3 bolt = flat
4 bolt = dished.
That one is flat

Black Blower thing on top of the engine was probably an aftermarket cooling shroud. Many like the look of the 911 cooling system which takes a 911 alternator. Not uncommon to nix the mechanical fuel pump and install a rotary electric fuel pump (especially if it had duel carbs). |
