Here's a photo of an 091 with the locker installed that I planned on running in my score class 5 racer.

How does this one work? How do you lock/unlock it? Or is it a limited slip? |

they make a lockrite that fits vw??
I had one in the front axle of my jeep, beefy unit, it could handle a beating. |

It locks completely when you are powering... there is no slip and it's automatic. It tends to push you out of a corner or throw you into a power slide when cornering... although it is controllable. The increase in off-road-ability is unbeleivable! I've been able to keep up with hardcore off-road trucks with no problems... the only limitation is ground clearance and approach angles. I think the locker is still available through weddle engineering and it's an easy install... it just replaces the spider gears. |

Yep, they make them for VW... just the bus 091 tranny though. A baja bug with this setup would be unstoppable! I think I'm the only one off-roading a transporter with a locker at this point. haha |

what is it like on the road. The website says that on the street, it allows the vehicle's wheels to turn at different speeds by unlocking and making a clicking sound, but they don't reccommend it for daily drivers. I'm guessing its because it will wear out with constant driving on paved surfaces.
breg7784-What are your experiances with driving this on the pavement? Does it make the front end push much? What happens if you try to back up that hill in the video? How loud is the clicking? Does it still drive OK on the street, or do you have to let off the gas to get it to unlock and make a turn?
How much was it and did you put it in yourself? |

I did install it myself and I beleive it was around $350 from weddle engineering. There is absolutely no clicking sound with the 091 version... but I have heard the clicking with the jeep versions... the sound is worthy of a pound of metal shavings per corner (that's probably not true though). The frontend does push out when powering around corners but it is controllable. If you adjust your driving by not powering while cornering the diff feels stock. I have not had a problem with the 091 version in my daily driver... The locker is made of high grade steel and it doesn't wear on it self when unlocked so I don't think there is much of a wear issue on pavement (I have been running it for 3 years). It also locks in reverse and forward... whenever power is applied. So backing over obstacles isn't a problem. The only thing I can say is a fault with the locker is its abilities on ice... If you are on an icy side slope both tires spinning will slide you down that slope. |

I meant slipping a tire isn't a factor in negotiating an obstacle anymore with the locker... just clearances. |

Yep. I don't see the need for that unless you're pumping out a few hundred horsepower. I'm running the 2 pinion in my single cab. |

I am really interested in this. Did you happen to take any pics of the install?
I guess I'm still unsure of how this will affect the car on the street.
I understand how it locks up, but I don't understand when or how it unlocks. I understand that it locks under power and unlocks when you let off, so what happens when you stop at a stop sign and make a right turn. Does it act normally if you don't give it too much power, or do you just live with it pushing through the corner? |

Im not sure about the one for a bug, but i know that lockers for 4x4s scrub tires when used on the street. And wheel hop is horrible. if you can get an electric/air locker for a bug it would def be something i would buy, just flip it off while on the street. |

Basically there are two gears that engage when the diff is spun by the engine locking the diff... when there is no power the gears do not engage allowing the diff to spin freely. Its hard to explain but when you actually see the locker it's obvious. So turning from a stop the locker will tend to push you out of a corner no matter how much power you apply... it's just something you have to get use to. But its not like you are struggling to make the turn. As rickosuave1987 put it, the ideal situation would be a swithchable locker... but I have not experienced wheel hop with the "auto-locker" in my single cab. I would definitely recommend this upgrade for any off-road VW owner. I did not take any fotos of my install... don't know what I was thinking. But, if I remember correctly it is a simple process. I bought an 091 from the junkyard for $300, removed the bell housing and removed the diff. Then, with the aid of snap ring pliers installed the locker. The only difficult part of the installation is setting the slop in the ring and pinion. If you're running an 091 in a bug the only mods you have to make to it (besides tranny mounts and cv shafts) is a bus 002 bell housing and an 002 input shaft... both of which slip into the 091 without modificationand allow you to bolt in a type one engine. |

With all the trail riding and an upcoming trip to Moab, I've decided I'm going to get one of these things for the baja.

subybaja, where did you get those prices? Four Wheel Drive parts is quoting me almost $300 for the 1310, and Summit has it for $264. |

Aircooled.net has something similar for the T-1 transmission, but you have to buy the whole transmission for $3350. It says its for drag racing and is the strongest T-1 transmission available. It has a Quaife Differential, some sort of torque biasing differential that puts power to the wheel thats not spinning. I don't know if it could handle off road or not. What do you guys think?
Heres a link

I recently heard that you can't get the lock-right locker anymore because they stopped producing them... due to lack of sales. Supposedly weddle bought the jigs from lock-right then stopped making them (this is hear say). Anyone know if they're actually being sold any more? Of course they are being advertised, but are they available? |
