Would like some opinions here.. Got into a discusison with a friend and we were talking about timing on our buggies. We both have 73 stock DP engines. Ours both have stock carbs and vac adv distributors.

He says he runs his timing at 34 degrees (vac disconnected) with no problems and isn't worried about engine ping since it is trail riding only and no street use.

I have stayed at 30 degrees to be safe, but same conditions-never really on the road.

Being lightweight-about 1300 lbs and hardly ever gettng into 4th gear, is he taking much of a chance at 34 degrees to blow his engine?

Quote: 34 degrees

The higher gas octane rating = more advanced timing.

A worn engine (low compression) will tolerate lots of advance. Altitude plays a part too, higher altitude = more advance. A carb that is set rich will too. No simple answer, every engine is a little different.

He is also correct that a car that is flogged hard on the highway will ping from load and heat quicker.
