I'd rather race an old Bug but that's where it gets tricky. It comes down to a 50 (or so) year old car against a ten year old car. Honda has buildings full of engineers and Indycar experience. We have die hard enthusiasts.

This happens at the factory level too. Every now and then a stock engine performs better than it's peers. A buddy had a '73 El Camino 454 that was bone stock and unusually quick. Back then in the middle of the "Smog Dog" era they were generally pretty disappointing. Not that one!
Dad bought a Bay Window in '69 that exceeded all factory performance data by a fairly large margin. In fact it was more powerful than the later 1600 DP engines.
A little old lady in my home town bought a '74 Dodge Dart 4 door with a 318 that would peal rubber like it was a 340 from now till next Christmas if asked to.
Another friend bought a Chevy 1500 in '75 with a 305 (those were well known to be dogs!) that had really good power, as good as the 350 and got close to 30 mpg.
It just some times happens, maybe the stars just line up?
My dad had a 1970, 3/4Ton 4 speed truck with a 318 first gear was 30+ could not max it out in 4th, got a burnt intake valve, took it to school to do a valve job, good old days, ordered intake valves 3 different times same problem, put the valve in the guide and it would drop past the seats, Dodge in there get it made mode just pulled 340 heads and finished making the motor. 340 heads and a 2 barrel carb don't mix, but make a good built in rev limiter. |
