It never ceases to amaze me what people "think" old Ghia parts are worth without even attempting a minute amount of research. I sent the person the following note:
Quote:
Hi,

I saw your ad for the upper Ghia door hinges, and I hate to say this, but used hinges are not worth $300. The driver's side upper hinge typically suffers the most wear and tear because the lower hinge wears and breaks, creating stress on the upper. Karmann Ghia Parts and Restorations sells new hinges for $56 http://www.karmannghia.com/viewDetail.asp?strMasterCat=&idproduct=4164

Just an FYI, but I thought I would inform you of this lest you receive an unkind e-mail from another party.

Some people are cool with the notes I send them when I let them know if a particular item is not going to fetch some astronomical price (quarter windows are a great example), while I've only had one person send a terse reply that I mind my own business. Well, fine by me, but your ad is going to be laughed at by everyone because you've been smoking crack thinking your broken dash script is worth $35.

I suspect people think early ghia popouts are $^3 because early bug popouts are $^2 Either that or they're just stupid.

I have a used NOS wiperblade I will trade for the hinges.

If you have seen some of the prices people post for a transmission, then I can retire early. Oh, and quarter window posts (with lots of corrosion and flaking chrome) could buy me gas for a year at the prices come people charge.

Edit: Just got a response from the seller. Turns out it was a typo and the ad was supposed to read $30. He thanked me for letting him know.

I've got some floor panels coming from Mike any day now. When I trim up the rust holes, should I mail you the cut out parts, or just e-bay them?

& your opinion of TMI interiors is spot on.

Would those be OG rust holes, NOS rust holes, or Repop rust holes - big difference in value.

Ozzie Mon Dec 11, 2006 9:18 am

OG, nothing new about them.

Hey Tom,

I think you made a mistake on your prices. Anyway, we discussed that thinback seat before, and IIRC, he originally wanted $1,200 for it. Funny how he's "not dumb" and going to sit on it until it sells.

The only Ghia popouts that are worth money are the 72-74.

Curious, what's the difference between 72-74 popouts from earlier ones?

The hinge setup. Check out my Gallery. I have pictures comparing the windows across the years.

I sent a message to the person with the "HTF $200 rear seat". Someone is full of misinformation, because it's based on, "what he heard":

Well, first of all...Depending geographically where one lives may or are very hard to find these seats as I was told by many of my enquires that they cant find a good or even any early ghia rear seats hero. You might be one of these fellas who live in California and has all sorts of oppurtunities awaitng for this type of early ghia seats. So, that is why who ever you may be, it is listed as "HTF!!"..

Sorry, but I don't live in California. The reason I asked is because the coupe rear seats are easier to find than the convertible. I have a lot of experience with Karmann Ghia parts and your price is ridiculous. A good set of coupe rear seats is worth about $50, not including the shipping charges. If you think you can get $200, then best of luck to you, because I don't see it happening.

He wrote me back stating someone had bought a rear seat for his 61 Ghia at a similar price. I responded wanting to know what his market is. I could make a killing selling to those people.

where can I sell a coupe rear seat for $50? I would be happy to sell one for that. hell, I will make a package deal for two of them...

one technique that I have for people who are asking ridiculous prices is to offer to sell them the same goods for half or less of what they are charging.

DaveM Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:47 am

I had an early coupe seat for sale for a long time, I changed the price multiple times between 50 and 100... someone emailed me and asked for the material off of it and since it hadnt sold for over 6 months, I patiently took off the upper portion material and sent it to them for free stating I still didnt think the material was usable. I never heard back to see if it was used. Regardless, I kept the batting, horse hair pad and frame, put it all up in the loft and removed the ad.

thom Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:51 am

I just happen to be in the market for a coupe seat - mine is rotted all to hell - it's hard to take measurements, it's so delaminated...
