look in a VW magazine for the DUI dsitributor. This is a GM HEI conversion, you buy it then hook it up. I haven't used it, but I do know it exists. Also, try doing a search on DUI here on the samba, maybe limiting it to the performance catagory. |

I did it years ago... The advance curve is wasted on a VW engine as is, but you can tweak it. |

Looks like the price has come down about $90 since they introduced them. Guess they didn't realize at first how cheap most VW people are. The price is now comparable to a Mallory Unilite, and possibly an MSD also, so the GM style dizzy may show up on more VW's.
Check out the page I linked, running one of these means no mechanical fuel pump and no single mount carb. No biggie, but something to be aware of. |

Don't forget you need to remove the mechanical fuel pump, so the price it $70 higher.
And as Jake said... the curve isn't right out of the box. |

As a neophyte to HP VW engines, I bought one due to the clean installation and off the shelf replacement parts. When I ordered it, they asked me all the info on the engine, weight of the vehicle, and what I wanted in an advance curve. Basically I said I wanted the advance to come in quickly and give roughly 20-22° total advance at 3000rpm. I told them I would not be running vacuum advance and my plan was to use FI for fuel. I also stated that I wanted to have no hesitation due to distributor lag. Haven't tried it yet as I haven't built my engime yet, but they gave me a sheet showing the curve and said they set up quite a number of VWs succesfully. I have to admit it's a big honking unit, but I like the one wire hook up and separate tach wire. Anyone with first hand experience? All feedback is welcome. How else you gonna learn without blowing lots of $$$ in order to gain empirical knowledge.
Thanks,
Tim |

Yes. He asked me if I wanted with or without at the time of order. I went without, provided the advance came in quick enough to avoid flat spots, because I don't have a vacuum source for the dizzy. They didn't use to offer this, but enough people asked for it, that it is now an option. |

This is the one from eyeball engineering. It allows you to run a stock fuel pump if you wish. Bruce can answer any questions you have about advance. Mine works great though
