I'm building a stock 1600 DP and need rockers. Should I put in stock or would it be better to add ratios? Will they cause any issues with reliability? 1.25 or 1.4 better for reliability? Will they just bolt up with stock push rods or do I need diff push rods? Any other mods?
If ratio rockers cause no problems and increase performance, why did VW not install them at the factory?
Thanks in advance |

Sooo many questions..
Yes Ratio Rockers can be used, with a stock engine a 1.25 set will wake it up but quality matters. I'd only recommend 1.4s with heavier valve springs
and a cam suited for them.
The other question is an endless one but IMHO it's a question of reliability vs performance gain. You also have to base this on the technology in terms of cams, lifters, springs and guides that were available at the time. Increased lift puts additional stress on springs, guides and valves. So, like a tiny, restrictive intake manifold and exhaust, conservative valve train was the norm.
If you're buying a set of Ratio Rockers, expect to spend some good money for a high quality set. Don't go cheap. |

Use the stock rockers and if you want somthing more just get a little more lift on the cam. I would only use ratio rockers if you need an outrageous amount of lift or your not pulling the motor down and don't want to do any more then pulling valve covers. If your stock rockers and shafts show wear the just turn the shaft over. VW puts 3 or 4 times the amount of oil needed in order that the oil will pick up heat and remove it from the heads. Make sure the wavey washers and clips are in good shape. Vic www.vwhelp.com Rocker Arms <> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/0.valve.train.htm |

1.4 rockers work perfectly fine on stock cams, i've done it to a few motors with good results. One in a low revving bus I kept the stock springs too without any problems. If you plan on revving any higher than 4400rpm or so, then I would change the springs out too.
Also, the oil has nothing to do with head temps. Not one bit, sorry. |

The 1.25 rockers work great with stock cams, lifters and springs, I put them in on a 1641 I had a while ago and their was noticable power gain.
Ive never used 1.4s on a stock cam but could see how there would be problems once you start higher revs. if you go 1.4s go with a suited cam, and dual valve springs
caste
p.s. and no matter what they say you can run stock valve covers on 1.4 rockers. |

It's the ration of cam lift to valve lift.
A 1.4:1 will lift the valve 1.4mm for every 1mm of cam lift.
A 1.25:1 will lift the valve 1.25mm for every 1mm of cam lift. |
