does anyone have information on putting a powerglide to a vw engine. Any help on this would be great. :) This is going in a light weight 1/8 mile race car. |

They have the crank adapter hub too. |

I think that the VW motors rotation is not compatible with a powerglide. |

That makes sense, because you have to reverse the rotation of a Corvair to use it with VW transaxles. |

Both VW engines and standard Chevy V-8 engines along with most other engines rotate clockwise, so running a VW on a glide, TH-350, 400, 700R4 etc, is no problem at all. The Corvair however rotates counterclockwise, its the black sheep. |

And some HONDA motors.....

Digging up a old thread.
I am looking at building a dragster with a VW engine mounted mid-ship, feeding power into a power glide hooked to a 12 bolt chevy rear end.
I have found the adapters from Chassis Shop for both the mating of the engine to the trans and the flywheel to the flexplate.
But I cannot find a way of mounting a starter.
Any ideas? |

I have been looking at this as well, I don't think a power-glide would be the first choice, I think I would use a turbo 350 instead. I think you would need more torque to pull a glide on the drag strip, I have heard that some are using turbo 200's now in some high horse power applications and they are lighter to boot. as for starting the motor, I haven't figured it out yet either.

If you can mount the vw crank to the Gm flexplate then it will use the GM starter. |

GM's usually mount the starter to the block, right about where number 3 cylinder is on a VW.
with a vw engine and a GM transmission, you have nothing to actually bolt the starter to, and no where for it to physically live. |

I had built a dragster with a glide about 15 yrs ago and i fabbed up a 1/4" aluminum plate for my rear engine mount and tranny belling housing mount the i install the gm starter under the #1 cylinder so that when it was bolted on it layed under the 1 2 cylinder banks? I hope this helps. good luck and post up pics as you go.
P.S. vw paradise can hook you up with the adapter i think.

theres companys that make ford bell housings to mate to a power glyde, cut the gm off and bolt the bell to the front pump housing. ford starters are mounted to the bell housing, teeth count might be an issue to use a ford starter on a gm flywheel but a spurgear is easy to fab or retrofit |

At first I thought that too, but a record still stands from 1986 that was made with a glide. When mated up to a 12 bolt chevy rear or a ford 9 inch, ratios of the ring and pinion into the low 6's can be had off the shelf. Or if a quick change rear is used they can go into the 7's.

That was one of my first options, but like mentioned above, the starter hits the sump/# 3 cylinder area of the VW block.
I have picked up 2 converters for a glide. A 8 inch 6200 rpm and a 7 inch 6800 rpm. Both are ATI brand and each have had 4 passes put on them.
I talked extensively with my machinest about this yesterday and he does not see a problem setting up a cup/mount surface to weld into the glide bellhousing for a high torque VW starter to mount into. The gear teeth match up rather nicely on a GM 168 tooth flexplate.
Looks like I will be ordering the adapter from Chassis Shop today to get started. |

Did this ever happen ? I too would like to do a powerglide and VW setup in a front engine 23 T bucket project
I have access to someone that can do the machine work just need some ideas / pictures and measurements |

a more modern 4-5-or 6 speed auto would be best to stay in the power band,a pg with a vw engine on the street may be a hot running dog.I was thinking about doing it to my roadster and 904 race trans with 6500 stall converter witch should be about right for a vw motor. |

I went a different direction entirely. Got into Fiberglass buggies and got stuck there. But I am re-building my Manx for April's NORRA 1000 race in Baja Mexico. So I am still into racing, just a different type where I can drive more than 6 seconds at a time. |
