Anyone know if Country Homes Campers did Bay Window conversions? I have always thought I owned a 1978 Sportsmobile conversion, but now I'm not so sure.

And this is from a 1982 Vanagon Country Homes Camper. They look identical to me. I saw a close up pic of the sink/water fill/stove on this '82, and it's also identical in placement to mine.

The '82.

Both also have the floor drain in the exact same spot, same drawer locations and look, etc.

I've done a search on Country Homes Campers, but all of the info I've found seems to be on Vanagons.

Nothing in there looks anything like my '73 Sportsmobile interior. Sporty's had unique curtain tracks too. Unless there's a label saying Sportsmobile I doubt that it is one. Does it have a pop top?

It does have a Sportsmobile-like poptop - straight up. And it has the chrome roof rack in the front.

This is what it looked like when I got it:

Everything I've found on the Country Homes Campers website seems to match my interior. I'm thinking it probably is a CHC conversion, but I still haven't found any bay window pics of one...other than Teri Hatcher's bus, which I always thought was a Sportsmobile, but now I'm thinking her's is a CHC also. Her bus has an identical interior to mine, and the roof rack looks the same.

That sure looks like a Sportsmobile top and rack. Is there a "Sportsmobile Penthouse" plaque or ghosting of decals on it anywhere? SMB is still in business, maybe they can shed some light. They actually sent me some decals for mine.

I really haven't seen very many late bay Sportys, my '73 seems like one of the latest, maybe the interiors changed that significantly by '78. Also all Sportys I've seen have 2-louver jalousie windows vs. sliders. Or maybe Country Home used SMB tops. Maybe you need to add Sportsmobile to your thread title to see if any other Sportsmobilers bite.

I agree - that's why I always thought I had a Sportsmobile. But then I found the CHC interior shots, and they look a lot like mine. There's no identifers or ghosted stickers on the poptop, Sportsmobile or otherwise. I've sent an email to Country Homes to see if they can shed some light. I've contacted Sportsmobile in the past, but they said they don't have any records of the VW conversions anymore. I've never actually seen any pics of a 1978 Sportsmobile's interior to compare to mine. I was reading one of the threads when I did a search on Country Homes Campers, and someone found a sticker with a CHC identifier on the water tank. That may be my next step.

Of course, the top and/or interior could have been added by PO's! Does the M-code plate show anything interesting? My Sporty was built by VW as a pretty basic no-frills Kombi. Mine also has a Sportsmobile builders sticker behind the drivers seat on the bulkhead.

I may be wrong, but it looks similiar to a safare interior. A lot of those details are familiar.

That's interesting - my bus was first bought at Oliver Volkswagen in Vallejo, CA (I have the original Warranty book) - they are only 90 miles apart. I'm pretty sure this interior and top are original to the bus (meaning not Vanagon swapped) - everything fits like it should. It also has an awning on the side, and I know CHC is big on awnings.

My M-code plate is not there - the bus has had a front end replacement at some point, and they cut it out! I'll check behind the driver's seat to see if I can find anything.

Mystery solved!! I just got this email (I had sent them links to pics of the bus):

Quote:
Hello Steve,

You have a Country Homes Camper. The company started in 1978 and was
located in Oakland. Then moved top Scotts Valley (Near Santa Cruz),
then to San Jose. I purchased the company in 1989 and closed it
in 1997. The keep my site up for informational purposes, help customers
find parts, sell some small parts (rollers, etc.) and I also sell Shady
Boy awnings. I am going to start another company and sell 3.27 R&P
sets for the automatic Vanagon.

Do you need any parts for you Camper?

Regards,

That makes sense (located in Oakland, they would have been 25 miles from where my bus originally came from).

I have no idea why I'm so excited about this - I've owned this bus for five years, and it really doesn't change anything about it. But, I do have a source for a poptop canvas now, and the accessories in the camper. Kind of cool!

Ditto on the similarities between CHC and Safare' aka Spirit Campers. Same burners, same fridge, same shape of closet and countertop. There must have been a general supplier for some of these parts and each builder put their own spin to the layout.

The bus still has a Sportsmobile top assembly no matter what the interior conversion is.

The top is the same series Sportsmobile Top as on my 1973 Sportsmobile. If you want any photos of the top let me know.

Cheers,
