Hi,

I have a vanagon 86 on which don't have central locking system.

The rear hatch lock is broken.

Can i replace it by the ones sell a Van-Cafe which is for vanagon with central locking system?

http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_1386_850/rear-hatch-lock-with-keys.html

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Yes and Peter wasn't sure. I will try it soon, but not now.

My opinion is it should work, but i am not sure and the model without locking central system part is very rare and hard to find.

It should work ,you just have to "Park" it in the correct position ,as the actuator just moves it into and out position to allow the button to push it .
That lock has 3 positions where a non power has 2 and the 3rd is an override to open the door from the back when the powers are locked .

Is this tricky, or an easy task, Stacy, to put the actuator in the right position?

Salut Martin,

I hope it works, because I have a whole original power lock kit in my basement waiting to be installed. I haven't pulled the panel on the van, so no picture of the non-power-lock version, but here are some of the power-lock version:

The whited-out parts are where the key number is located

My understanding:
- the lock is pictured with the top up, with the key in the "locked" position (Edit: wrong. It is upside down).
- in the "unlocked" position, the metal part where the whited-out part is located would be turned 1/4 turn clockwise. In the top picture (which I guess is the "power-door-lock locked position", pressing the button would do nothing. In the bottom picture, it would allows the latch to operate.
- in the "special, power-door-lock-only position" (1/8th turn counterclockwise), the latch would operate in both "states".

Switching from the 1st to the 2nd position is just pushing the part on the rod. Actually, the little white connector on the bottom is where the power door rod is attached.

Don't forget to switch the tumblers from your old latch to the new one. It only required removing the roll ping that is barely visible in the picture).

Good luck,

Jean-Marc

So a few more notes now that I made the switch (and fixed some errors in my previous post):

- The non-power-door-lock part

Installed (again, with the key code whited-out):

And be aware that you have to switch the tumblers to regain your original keying. You can't just switch the lock cylinders whole. One place where the difference between the cylinders is obvious is at their end: one is half round, half square, the other is square with a cut corner (sorry for the bad picture).

Also, it doesn't impact functionality, but be aware that the power door lock part extends roughly 1/4" more outside the hatch than the non-PDL part.
