you'll be better off wit a 1776 to be honest.

spec if case is good:

machined to 90.5
barrels/pistons to match cast should be fine, but can go forged
counter weighted crank to run smoother with the higher rpm's
balanced stock rods
lightened flywheel
044 40x35.5mm heads, with a mild port/polish
twin 40s
1700lb clutch
110 cam, or maybe a 120 if you do run the 40's, as there will be a flat spot with that cam
1.25:1 bolt up rockers.

the 2007 is definately a bit big a jump, you'll be quite suprised with the 1776...i was, but ive bin offered a wild 1835 for free, so thats bein built wit 90.5 and a 78mm crank for the 2007

There is no reason you can't build a 2007cc. A 78mm crank is a very streetable size. I have a 2007cc in my Ghia and it's very reliable. I would be willing to drive it across country.

cost......that's another story. My rule of thumb is to add up all the parts and then double that. My guess is around 2 grand.

what kind of budget do you have?

Are you building it? What's your skill level?

How much HP are you looking for? How fast do you want to go? what's your goal?

I am building a 1776 and I bought used Dell 40's for $460 with linkages and all, so far I've droped $749 on a Scat rebuild kit upgraded with forged crank. I am not doing the labor myself (though I did do the tear down) complete rebuild labor from the guy I am using is $300 I should save a little by doing the tear down. So far that is $1509 My rockers will be $99 and I plan to spend about $200 on heads. $1808 + machine work on case will be abother $160 and gotta factor in hardware kit (new bolts and studs) so I figure $2050 will be a safe figure.

You can get the same Scat rebuild kit for $619 with 90.5, 92 or 94mm p/c you will pay upgraded for the crank it comes with a cast 69mm.

Well I called to set up my order and I was talked into building a stroker, for just $80 more then having a forged 69mm I am getting a forged 74mm. Call Scat (can get all the info at http://www.scatvw.com) and the guy I spoke with Ron @ ext 133 was so helpful to for a noob like me (you could tell you were talking to a VW builder not just a salesman). Of course I confided in samba before deciding on the larger crank to make sure I was not being fed a line, but it all checked out Smile

so let's say i went through with getting that kit and the larger crank...then machine work will be around $300 right?...what else would i need to buy? and how hard would it be for me to put it back together? hotvw's has a great article on stripping down to the small block this month...doesn't look too hard...

I didn't like the article really, it did help me remove my pistons though.

I was told the machine work for my case (using a stock crank) would be about $160, but I did go with bigger crank. A few things I found out:

A. Have the engine machined before you order your kit, the salesman needs to know the thrust thickness to get the right main bearing and also the boreline measurement for something else I don't remember.

B. Are you reusing your old exhaust? New engine needs to breathe good Smile

C. You will need an oil cover/kit for the new screw on filter you'll want to use.

D. Studs, nuts and bolts, plan on reusing or replacing?

E. Replacing heads and rockers can't hurt Smile

I have almost 1k with kit + Scat exhaust/muffler. Still got to get heads and ratio rockers (another $400 lets say) Machine work go with your figure of $300 plus hardware. I am paying someone $300 to rebuild mine also. So I am sitting around $2100, and that is not including the Carbs I already have.

These are things I was asked when I was ordering my new kit. Hope this helps, I just went through the process so it's fresh in my head.
