| I've read the books, magazines and talked to a few locals who have VW knowledge, but with todays technology, what is a practical limit for a true daily driver able to make 200 mile time on a whem? Some will argue for the classic 90.5 x 69 kadron motor, others say stroke it and go 94's with fans and coolers. I live in Texas heat, what say you? |

A big 2387cc (86X94) would be able to go on a 200 mile drive, but I would not expect it to live more then 50,000 miles total.
A 2007cc (78X90.5) could go on a 200 mile drive, or 5000 mile drive and live for 100,000 miles if built correctly. This is the largest I would personally build for a real daily driver that you can drive any day, all day, in the winter, or 100* + summers. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

My personal opinion, displacement isn't the limit, rather how radical the valvetrain is.
I've got a set of 94's that I installed in 1999 and just barley had to retire them. I ran them in my daily driven 2276 while living in Las Vegas (120 F summertime temps!) and used them again in my full drag motor.
The reason they're retired? I don't run air cleaners on my drag car and I must have a bunch of jank going through my motor. They had some scoring going on (not too much though). But overall they still had all the factory cross-hatch in the barrels all the way around them. They were not wearing unevenly at all. Had I a way to keep air filters on my engine i'm sure they'd still be running hard to this day.
94's are proven to me. I beat on my old 2276 cruising 85mph in 120 degree heat day in and day out and drove out of state with it a number of times. I even sent my wife on an out of state trip with it to visit her parents, no worries. She even lit the tires up in front of her dad. Made his heart swell from what I heard.
Just my opinion though. Of course, it mostly comes down to if the engine was build right or not. _________________ Eric Allred

Fer sure... any big engine not balanced, machined right, and assembled right is a time bomb. |
