Hi All, I have a venerable 3 speed auto in my 89'. But I'm looking to replace it with a 4 speed automatic. I've read that people have used Audi 5000, 4 speed auto's bolted onto the final drive of the 3 speed. But has anyone out there acutally done this or seen it in a van? (what year Audi has these transmissions?)
How about a Porsche transmission? Thanks for any insight......... |

The 4 speed Type 097 automatic doesn't have anything in common with the earlier 3 speed unit. So unfortunately it isn't compatible with the final drive of the 3 speed. You can use the automatic section of an Audi 5000 turbo tranny, but that is still a 3 speed with the exact same ratios. The only advantage here is stronger internals.
The other thing to keep in mind about the 4 speed and the later ZF trannys that Audi used is that they are all computer controlled rather than governer controlled. That means even if you could physically mount it, you'd have to have an engine that could supply the appropriate signals to make the tranny work.
Interestingly, it is possible to get a 5 speed automatic from a late model Passat/A4/A6 to work. You have to switch the gearset at the back of tranny from a 3 gear set to a 2 gear set, but that will get the drive flanges turning in the correct direction. Same problem with the electronic controls though. This would be a great conversion for someone updating to the matching 1.8T or Audi V6 that goes with the transmission.
