So..... I am looking around at ads on here and I stumble across this gem. I start thinking what if you DON'T shorten your clutch cable, wrap it around a pulley like this, or smaller if you need more feel, and attach the cable end to a bracket somewhere on the tranny. No cutting cables ANYMORE, and if you break down(VINCENT ) you can borrow ANYONE's clutch cable. NEAT IDEA HUH??? Just thinking out loud.

I am Right at the clutch cable shorting phase myself, with the cable sticking out of the bowden tube at full lenght. (I had to cut into tunnel and do clutch tube repair at pedal assembly where factory tack had failed).. and now on to the shortening... I saw a thread simmular where some one had the Pully Cha-Cha "Clutchen-unst-shortenhowzer" set up. So my wheels have been turning as to this approach OR the cut and Saddle "Clampin-das-cable" Cha-Cha.
I do think the Samba members product is cool.
Also thinking out-loud,
Ditto on using anybodys cable if needed.
time to forum search "shorting clutch cable" to refresh my mind and see how many un-related threads I can find to keeb me busy untill I fall asleep.
Murzi, the second link shows having an aluminum pully wheel, Wouldnt this wear fast against a steel cable? |

I'd had the same thought a while back and was/am going to try it on my buggy build. My thought was to have the cable go around the pulley at a 90* angle, and have an attachment point somewhere on the passenger side. This way to adjust the clutch you just reach somewhere behind the passenger back tire and twist the wingnut. No climbing under the car necessary. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

I think that would cause the pulley to want to go sideways as you pressed the pedal. I think you need to keep the cable runs parallel if you want a linear action.
Thinking about it, if the cable only had a single run, I don't think a regular saddle clamp would work very well. The best thing would be to run the cable through a hole in a fitting which has a couple set screws perpendicular to the cable hole. Kinda like this
The cable could go through a hole in a steel bracket mounted on the trans and the fitting would anchor the cable on the other side of the bracket. There would only be half as much tension on the fitting/set screw, so the cable would probably last forever without breaking. |

Good call on the sideways deflection. The physics in my brain don't generate those kinds of unwanted results. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

Would not the cable wrapped around a pulley decrease the length of pull by 1/2 (something about the physics bothers me) seems you will only get half the movement needed to engage/disengage clutch...
Same concept as using snatch block with winch.... You increase pull ration in power (2x) but decrease distance moved by 1/2....

Correct. You double the total travel needed to do the work, but cut the force required in half. Since the stock design has more than enough stroke, this works out. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

Yes, the pedal would have to travel twice as far.
I might look at a McMaster Carr 3099T13 |

A loop with 3 cable clamps is quite easy to do.
I cut mine and used 3 clamps. It has been going with zero problems for almost eight years now.
Only the young bucks are going to bend down and look under the body behind the wheel, Most of them probably wouldn't know what a clutch cable is let alone one that has been cut and shortened. _________________

This is the best hydraulic clutch master cylinder installation I've ever seen on a VW pan, one small round hole in the tunnel, no holes in the body, easily accesible.
