nope, the vdo unit is not working, brezelwerks does a modification to the arm and housing, it will work, but it looks a bit strange.

i do rebuild the gauges also (orignal metal version) and in the near future i might be able to made some sending units.... but we will see...

Its great others are working on these gauges also!

The standard mechanical VDO sending units do work well. The main modification is reverse bending the float arm, basically so it pulls the cable as the float sinks in the tank, thats the easy part. Doesn't look too strange otherwise, and once its in the tank no one can see the float.

From there the question is just how original looking do you want your VDO sending unit to mount, and also look from the outside? If you want to install and have it look the same as the Dehne (with one hole in the tank), we custom cut the split washer nut (the inside the tank piece which secures the sending unit housing to the tank). This nut rotates into the tank exactly same as the Dehne sender does.

Without this split nut washer alot of work would be needed in able to modify your tank with nuts welded on the inside of the tank which match the screw pattern of the VDO sending unit. You can't tap nearly enough machine screw M5 threads into the thin gas tank metal. Instead, making the split nut washer would take a tenth of the time to do, plus it looks like the Dehne. Now, I've once seen someone fastening down a VDO sender to an oval tank with #10 sheet metal screws (through undersized holes drilled into the tank), and that will work and be rather fast to install it that way, but its nowhere as reliable as machine screws, and there is no way to get a nice concentric seal on the top to minimize gas fumes.

Mechanically the original style underside washer nut squeezes completely around the hole cut in the tank, so it squeezes from top and bottom. Sheet metal screws only give you that seal in one direction and its not even, so if someone decides to go with sheet metal screws you would want to use a generous amount of silicone or better yet a gas resistant epoxy all around the bottom of the sender and on the cork gasket you make/use. You need the best seal you can possibly make. You don't need a sealant with the split washer nut.

Other than the split washer nut all there is needed is @1/8" thick cork gasket, and neither of these parts are too difficult to make on your own, but the split washer nut should be 1/8" steel with all the M5 tapped holes for the top sender screws to fit through, in case anyone is interested in the DIY route.

What might look strange to some though once you have your VDO sending unit installed, would be seeing a VDO cap on top of the sending unit when it comes to looking at the gas tank. Our reproduction Dehne sending unit cap though is die stamped to fit specifically over the VDO sender, plus we put our perfect copy of Dehne water slide decal on top. So when you are done, no one would ever guess the internal mechanism is VDO.

Just mentioning the above to help others make the most appropriate decision for them, as not everyone is particular about all the details. We're also booked solid here for the next few months, and not planning to do any Dehne work until at least mid/late March.

But would definitely love to know more what Dehne sending unit Oval56 might be working on, would be good for others to know and have some other options to consider.

so time is going on, first samples are made and the process is going on.

to sender styles will be availible in limited quantity.

i will not reproduce stuff to make original cheaper, first mission is to complete original ones.

the floaters are in progress in the moment.
