I need some help with my driver side door alignment. When I had my '63 towed home, it was towed from the back side and while going down the interstate the driver side door opened and pulled forward buckling the metal by the hinges, the door will close and latch but not like it should....if you bump the car the door will open.....should I try and hammer the hinges back into alignment with the door on? Do I need to take the door off to fix this problem? I want to do this right but I am a novice and beginner body man....this is my first restoration.
Thank s in advance

You have a case of the door sitting too far forward and not latching properly. If you check the gap of your door you should notice that the gap at the front edge next to the A pillar is to tight. This is what happens to a door that gets over extended in the open direction. You have to bend the mounts that the door attaches to by placing a 3/4 chissel wrapped in tape to save the paint and place it between the inside of the hinge with the sides of the chissel jamming the door hinge. While you hold the chissel in place ( do one hinge at a time ) you slowiy close the door and when the door come to a stop cause of the chissel jamming the door hinge you give the door a quick push towards the closed direction and repeat for the lower hinge. Check your work and repeat untill you have a uniform gap and the door closes properly. You are in basicaly twisting the hinge supports back with this action. |
