PostPosted: Sat Jul 04, 2009 7:57 pm    Post subject: Second Alternator??? Reply with quote

Hi yall. i've noticed i've been browsing craigslist, and other sites, and found a few ads for random vw's (rails, buggies, regular bugs, etc.), advertising they have a second alternator (usually chevy 1 wire) hooked up. I tried the search tool, but could not find anything on the topic, so here i am. How do you add another alternator?

I plan to add a pretty serious system, and other electronics (2000w system, a few tv's, and hopefully later an air ride system.

Thanks in advance yall
-Mike

Might want to do a search..."ALTERNATOR HACK JOB"

Seriously I would never do something like this. There are 95 amp versions of the stock VW alternator that will do the job.

Check this out:

It might be easier to add a couple of Optima deep cycle batteries. Honestly, I'd rather invest all that money in a good motor but, to each his own.

2000W? Is that a typo, or is your car going to double as a PA system? Shocked

This does not work. The Fan just slips and the engine overheats. Mine was like that and it would overheat on the freeway everytime I drove it until I got rid of the second alternator.

I'd agree with that. tension / belt area on the fan pulley. Looks like you need a double pulley off the crank and space out the 2nd alt on a dedicated belt.

Now thats what i'm talking about. And in the perfect location, away from the turbo. i love it. Is that your car? if so, what did you make the mounts out of? in the pic it just looks like some bend flat bar, or angle iron. Did you just drill a hole in the generator, and tap it for the top mount? And yes, i'd prolly either buy, or make a double pulley for it.

lol, yes, the plan is for 2000W. hence the need for a second alt. don't want to over stress the stock alt. i go to alot of outings and parties with some friends, usually fish, or something at night, and thought it would be cool to have something to listen to, while dicking around. i have a friend who is deep into car audio stuff, and just happens to have two 1000W amps from when he upgraded his system (how the hell do you upgrade from that Shocked , lol). I plan to have two 12's in tha trunk. then some 6's in the doors, and maybe some 6 X 12's around the 12's in the trunk (and a few more inside the car).

I plan to have the whole thing seperate from the stock system. Meaning the stock alt will have its own battery (for the engine, headlights, etc.). Then the chevy alt will have a different battery seperate from the existing battery to power only the radio, and amps. Then maybe have a cable in between the two batteries to link them up, but with a switch in between turned off, and only switched on, in case i leave the lights on of something, lol.

Thanks for the responses so far. i really appreciate it Very Happy

The only proper way to do it is with a double pulley. Both off one belt slips the belt and slows the fan causing overheating.
