So I finally dug back into my Baja after putting it on the back burner about 6 or 7 months ago. I have ordered up most of my parts needed to finish off the Ecotec Swap, and I have already put in a few days wrenchin and fabbin on it. Here are a few pictures from today to catch everyone up to speed on what I am doing. There are several more in my gallery and on my SHMO's BAJA page.

SHMO,
That is one clean and neat looking package, not to mention some nice craftsmanship.. I'm in the process of doing an ecotec in my 68 (waiting on parts right now) . Looking foward to seeing your progress and hearing about how it runs and handles.

NICE WORK!!!!!!!!!!

SHMO,

You have to make a trip down to so cal desert so I can hear that thing run. Looks really nice. May I make a suggestion. The filter mounted to the throttle body is actually robbing you of power. I would recommend you mount the filter at least a minimum of six inches away from the throttle body. Air flow will straighten out before hitting the throttle plate increasing velocity and laminer flow to improve torque and horsepower. When the air comes in from the filter it's spinning around in all directions. By simply adding a short piece of tube or better longer tube it will straighten out resulting in a nice smooth flow. So, bend a 2.25 diameter, piece of 0.065 wall aluminum tubing and route that filter to sit on top valve cover. Adapt the filter to the tube. This way way least you keep the filter out of the tires fling path.

YA,

who the hell are you to tell me what to do! What are you, new?

Haha, just kidding you. Don't believe what these guys say. I am hands down the nicest; most understanding and level headed person on this forum. Rolling Eyes

Actually MPQ Manx, I appreciate the advice. I am not too concerned with the filter being in harms way. It is considerably safer than a VW motor with twin carbs. But, I have been thinking the same thing regarding airflow since day one of this engine swap. I looked into using a factory part to mount the filter at 90 degrees and space it away from the throttle body, but I don't really like the looks of the factory part. I figured I would eventually just buy a pre-made HAI kit and take a cutoff tool to it. I don't know, perhaps there is some place that sells random pieces that I can configure myself? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
SHMO

I bought the motor used from a crashed Cavalier. I think I paid like $400 bucks for that. Then, I shipped the motor off to Turnkey engine supply. In my opinion, they are the ONLY guys to deal with. I "Think" the adapter, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate alone retail for about $700 Soooo, if you can get a deal for under a grand you're doing good. But keep in mind, the big money is in the computer, wiring harness, header and so on. Basically, plan on dropping a few G's after you get the motor. I think I have about $3,500-$3,800 in my complete setup so far.

tuff_puff, i would lurk on some of the j-body websites and look around and see what kind of mods people with the cavaliers and sunfires have done to their engines, lurking on watercooled vw sites and seeing what kind of power people were putting out of their 2.0L vw motors is the reason I decided to go that route personally.

Saturnfans is a webpage for saturns, with a section dedicated to the ions and there are some guys that heavily modify their cars on there. I know guys with first gen 1.9L 16v saturn engines running over 300hp in turbo applications so there are definately some people that will play with an ecotec in their ions.

Mine makes 180hp. That doesn't sound like a ton of power, but I feel that it will move a Baja around pretty well. You gotta keep in mind most people glorify their motors. It's like every other guy with an 1835 and dual carbs thinks he is making 100hp. In reality, a 100hp N/A aircooled motor is pretty damn healthy. People often live in a wonderland in regards to horsepower numbers. I am pretty sure the torque the Ecotec makes will more than turn the tires, if not there is always more power to be had.

If you're so inclined, there is a TON of go-fast parts available for the Ecotec. You can basically take them from about 165hp to 1000+hp

The thing I am more or less sold on is the drivability and reliability. This motor "should" run like a watch, idle all day and never even so much as hiccup in 3 foot whooops. Plus, it should outlast the car. Building an aircooled motor that will do the same would cost millions...haha

No Sh*t that your ride is going to be screaming fast with over 180 hp. I wonder what that motor on a chassis dyno does at the wheels.

You are so right about misappropriating HP or torque. We live with this all the time at work.

I think the best thing about the EcoTec is the usable power band. Torque should perfect for off-roading in the hills/mountains around NW WA. Plus when you are ready to hit up the dunes she more then ready to buzz the rpm's.

Greg,
I missed the San Felipe trip this year. My wife is currently pregnant and we have a ton of things going on. But, my parents are down there right now enjoying the weather. I hope to be able to make it next year if things settle down for us. How have you been doing? Did you ever get the the drag race car finished up? Oh, and just so you know. You better tune up that Stranger.
