I just picked a new bus from VDubTech yesterday and have started cleaning it up a bit. It was a long haul to get it and I had a guy pull out in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes and was sliding down the rode with the bus on the back. Didn't hit him though. Dumbass. Anyway, Here are a few pics.
Loaded on the trailer:
VDubTech and I after we got the doors on and I'm getting ready to come home.
Here it is this morning after I cleaned the moss off some of it.
Anyone know where I can get some canvass for the top? I just need a piece to patch the holes in my top . There a couple small ones in the front and one in the back under the top and the one on the side. The rest of the top is mint and I don't want to replace it.
It needs some work but it'll be nice.

I just replaced my poptop. Go Westy has patches I think. But the material in your tent will be so brittle that it wouldn't be worth it.
It's time to upgrade, the new tops have windows on the sides for better ventilation. I got mine from Bus Depot. _________________ Los Alamos Nat'l Labs weapons rock. Lawrence Livermore weapons SUCK!

I will replace the top at a later time but I just want something for the time being. It will be a while before this bus sees any camping so patches will work. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to look into it.

Hey Geno, when I made a couple of tears in the OG canvas on my '79, I went to Wal MArt and got some patches from the fabric department. They were iron on, and 5 years later are still attached. They're even the same color as the canvas. I ironed them on from the inside so they wouldn't be so obvious. Helps to have someone hold a piece of wodd or other such hard material on the outside so you can prss with the iron.....glad you made it home ok dude...not get off the damn computer and go start fixing that thing!! |

Sail tape is also good stuff... got the most sticky adhesive ever. Put it on both sides and its stronger than the stuff ya stuck it to. _________________ 1971 Westfalia with a high top.

Wow, gmag69, you finally got a new bus body! That's gonna keep you busy for a long while. A camper, how fun! Is the upper bunk there? Definitely get yourself a 3 window tent one of these days... the extra openings make a nice crossbreeze on hot days. Bus Depot has the tents I like the best, but that comes later, you have enough to do for now.
Sail tape... learn something new every day. I was planning to use the iron-on stuff, but tape might be easier where I have to go around a corner. Do you know how long it sticks? _________________ `

I mixed some Elmer’s glue with water, and painted on piece of an old bed sheet for patches.
They are thin and flimsy, but should get the job done assuming you get them the stick well enough. |

I'll have to go look there. This is the least of my worries right now.Just want to get an idea where to look. When I slammed on the brakes The Torque converter, flex plate and that stuff flew off the pass seat pedistal and put a dent in the floor. I found all the bolts though. They flew in behind the nose. I just about have it all swept out now. I'll take some pics of it. The bunk is there it just needs the cushions. It's going to be a job but I can't wait to get into it.I'm going out and clean the mice nests out of the front air ducts.

Well I got the mice nests out of the airbox tubes that go to the dash. The backs of them are rotted out from the stuff setting in there for so long.I need to get the stuff out of the airbox itself still. I'm going to try a vacuum today. I'll post pics as soon as I take a couple. I started cutting the nose off it to put my new one on it. I'll fix the air ducts before I put the new nose back on. Pics to come. I'm going to use this thread as a running updated on this bus. I'll post pics as I go.

Well I was busy today. I got the nose cut off and most of the left over metal taken off. Here is a few pics.
This is what happens if mice build nests in you fresh air ducts and it isn't cleaned out. This will be replaced with pieces from my '74 parts bus.
I hope to have the ducts welded on tomarrow and fitting the nose. Wish me luck. _________________ Check out my Westy resto. thread.

I plan to go get the nose out of storage today and get it fitted and start welding it back on. It really isn't that bad of a job to get the old nose off. If I could hane found my drill earlier in the day It wouldn't took me that long. Had to use a hammer and screwdrive to break the spotwelds around the windshield opening and by the fresh air flaps. I found the drill and it went alot faster. Just have to get the metal off the very bottom flange by the bumper and I'll be ready to go. Pics to come.

I got a little bit done yesterday on the bus. I got the front painted up and the passenger side air duct welded in. Here are some pics.
I tried fitting the nose yesterday and it is going to be an adventure getting it on to say the least. It will take some pulling and pushing and bending to get it on but it can be done. Will keep everyone posted as this goes on.

Well I worked on the bus again today for a little bit. Here are some pics.
Here is the driver's side fresh air duct welded in:
Here is the nose in place with most of the door seams bent over to hold it in place.
Sorry for the dark pics. Was just about dark here when I got done and snapped these. It was fun getting the nose to fit right. I had to hook the passenger's side door lip onto the A pillar and use a ratchet strap hooked to the driver's side bulkhead to pull the nose over enough the bend the door lip over. Then had to put the strap on the passenger side and pull it enough to bend the door flange over there. Looks good. Just need to drill the spotweld holes and weld them up and bend the bottom lip over right above the bumper. Also weld up the A pillars. A word of caution to anyone going to do this.Make sure you get all the old metal off of everwhere before you try and put the new nose on. Even the littlest piece of old metal will throw the nose all out of wack. After this I'm moving on to either the driver's dogleg or the Floor behind the bed that needs patched. Haven't decided yet. Keep watching for pics. I'll update as I go.

I'll be using the rattle can stuff as a temp cover to keep the metal from rusting. It'll be taken off before good primer is put on. I'll be using an auto primer when I go to paint the front.Maybe PPG DP40 or something along those lines.I'll probably use PPG Omni paint if I can get it in the Mexico Beige color. I won't be Rattlecan painting this one. I'm going to try and buff out the paint that is there now and do some touchups where the rust spots are. That is a ways away yet though. I have other stuff to take care of first.
