Yep,

Pretty certain it is a gas cap holder while you have it off filling your tank with fuel. Slips over the fuel filler neck, not sure what models, probably '68 and up Beetles?

It looks like it folds in half; the bead at the perimeter in interrupted at the bend point. This supports the theory that it fits around the filler neck, and hangs down to hold the cap.

What is the diameter of the hole? That could narrow the years it was designed to fit.

I don't know if that would work on a post 68 car with the external filler. Those filler caps are like the ones on modern cars with the threads that extend from the cap. To me that looks like it would hold the 67 and down style gas cap that's more flat. Either way, that is a really cool accessory.

Given the fold, it is very likely for the earlier, in-trunk filler. But it's not clear if it fits the early or late tank style, or both. Are the filler neck sizes different?

To me the hole doesn't look big enough to fit the bigger tank opening that went away in 60 I think. So I'd say it's for the later style with the filler neck on the drivers side.

Fits to 7/1972... its for bug, ghia, bus and type 3 ( standard equipment on all type 4's )

of course the starting year breakdown varies per models tank neck

Another dumb theory: I'd bet that when VW started selling bugs with the external filler- many a driver left their cap at the pump. Prior to that- with the filler inside the trunk- nobody EVER left their cap behind... Smile

Of course, it's a rubber bolster gascap holster

Of course it will. Fits to 7/72. My car was built 11/71.
