On a -67 car you have to replace the upper ninge pin with one that has the mirror mount. On 68+ cars the proper procedure required disassembling the door, welding in the mirror mount, touching up the paint etc. What I always do is use a Karmann Ghia sedan mirror mount. It screws ONTO the surface of the door with two sheet metal screws and has a chrome cap to cover, then use a 68-79 Beetle Convertible right outside mirror. It screws right into the ghia mount. When all done it looks stock and not half assed. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Crystal Lake, IL |

Ive heard that on 68+ bugs you can drill out the large hole that the mirror screws into in the exact same spot thats on the drivers side and there will already be a threaded plate there to mount the mirror in. Its simply covered up on the passenger side. This could be a myth though as I have never put this theory to the test. _________________ 72 Super Beetle

You may be correct. I got a door for my 72 out of a bone yard and it had the passenger side mirror location already in the door. Didn’t look like a cut and weld job. According the good people at Wolfsburg West, VW never offered stock mirrors until 1968 and until then there was no correct factory mirror. If that is true then I would suspect that VW doors on both sides would have the mirror mount. _________________ 3Bugs

Especially considering that VW sold both RH and LH drive cars, it would make sense to have both sides prepped to accept a mirror. |

And be careful and nice to both the mirror and the car. You can fuck up the paint and/or scratch the mirror quite easily... If you're an ass like me anyway... |

We're also doing this right-side mirror on a '65. What's the trick to getting the hinge pins out without paying a garage with special tools? |

Soak the pin that is still inserted into the door hinge (remember the threaded top was cut off at some point) with wd-40 or liquid wrench. Keep spraying down into it for days at a time and let it soak in. Then use a metal chisel and pound it out with a heavy hammer. This however does not always work. If you have access to an air compressor a air chissel will remove it in a pinch. If your not careful you might mess up your paint if you try to pound it out yourself. If you have cherry paint just pay the shop, it can't be more than 20 minutes at the most to remove this with an air tool that will not damage your paint. If your lucky it will remove easy by pounding, but if its the original its been there a long time and not likley to remove easily. |

Luis,
Is the air tool you mention that the shops are using any different than the an a air hammer? I would like to acquire one for my own use if they are. The air hammer and chisel approach is about 40% effective at getting them darn things out and almost 80% effective at messing up the paint.

its an air chisel not an air hammer. In my case it came right out in about 5 seconds, but remember I soaked it for about a week. Air chisel pics:

Actually, the tool itself is sometimes referred to as an "Impact Hammer" as you can use many non-chisel attachments in it.

Eastwood sells a hinge pin remover that looks like a c-clamp, for about $25. Haven't tried it on VW hinge pins, though. |

It would be great if mount was hidden behind door skin. Any more input on this or history? |

I want to put a pass side mirror on my vert but I'm very afraid it would mess up my paint getting the pin out. The shop would have to be liable for my paint before I would let them do it. _________________ OGJHC

I have a 1970 sedan w/o the sunroof. Prior to painting it my shop cut a hole on the pasanger door and welded in a nut to mach the threads on an reproduction of the right hand mirror. It works great and in heavy traffic as in Miami, Florida it has saved me from getting into an accident.
Hope this helps. |

Unfortunately, there is no hidden nut. Doors without the hole will only have the inner plate (with hole) to which the nut would have been welded. However, VW used to have special procedure to fit the right hand door mirror by cutting the hole and using a special nut. I found this quite a difficult process and preferred to use a late model steering wheel nut, which I would tack weld to the retaining plate after filing two slots to accommodate the welds. Obviously, great care is necessary with the paint work.
As a point of interest, since 95% of Bug production was LHD, the right hand doors had no mirror fittings as standard. But with RHD vehicles, they came with a blanking plate on the left door mirror mount, making it very simple to fit passenger door mirrors on these cars. |

I was hoping it would be easier I guess. I had a street car many yrs ago with the 5 panel panoramic mirror inside. Had to remove visors to do it but driving all the time in big city traffic it saved my bacon many times. That might be cheap alternative. I've just grown older and fonder of stock apperances. |

I checked 10 - 12 68 - 77 doors I have stored and all have the reinforcement plate with the hole but none had the nut. Other than risking screwing up you paint by welding use a Karmann Ghia sedan mirror mount. It screws ONTO the surface of the door with two sheet metal screws and has a chrome cap to cover, then use a 68-79 Beetle Convertible right outside mirror. It screws right into the ghia mount. When all done it looks stock and not half assed. I have installed maybe 20 of these over the last 30 years for customers. It is all done using VW parts and looks perfectly stock. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Crystal Lake, IL |

The hinge pin removal tool from Eastwood won't work. Because of the shape of the door you can't get the tool lined up straight . |
