A co-worker emailed me some very interesting photos of a type 1 engine setup. Apparently these are Hayabusa heads modified to work on a type 1 engine. This modification surpases my limited knowledge on this subject, so I'll let you fine folks take a peak, and make comments on what you see!

I respect the creativity involved but it seem to me like alot of time and effort wasted to make a sloppy version of a subaru.
With all that technology and inovation it still has a set of crappy carbs on it...
If I was going to go through all that work with hayabusa heads I would just run a 2.8L V8 with 450 HP.

You call that sloppy?! I'd like to see you're completely custom head swap. I always wondered why no one makes heads that have a completely different port design. Say a GM LS series intake and exhaust port design fitted around VW geometry in an air cooled head. Now that would make some power. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

I would be happy just to have valve covers that LOOK like I have overhead cams. I would love to see how much of this engine shows from the back of the car. If I pulled up to this in traffic, and saw that much hanging down below the body, I would run back home to mommy. |

I love when the game changes a bit. I drew these up (quickies) of some of the perversions I would like to experiment with. All I need is a milling machine and a million dollars. Yes there will be some injuries in the process.

That engine belongs to Brian Hyerstay. The heads are 100% custom, not modified Hyabusa heads. As far as a "sloppy" Subaru goes, Brian has made more HP in 1679cc's than most of you will ever pull out of a VW. It's good to know the standard is judged by those who do so little
Oh, and considering those heads are going on a 1679, some of you folks will be even further away from ever making the HP Brian puts down. _________________

There are innovators, and there are critics. Very few times do they settle in the same arena. Those look badass. |

That's some of the nicest "slop" i've ever seen.
I love to see people go outside the box and do something different, and this definitly is. I love it!
The irritating part is, i've seen people get more praise for a cookie-cutter build than this wicked setup. _________________ Eric Allred

Cooling isn't too much of an issue for a quarter-mile drive. _________________

spose not, just wondering about the line setup. It's a wow setup for sure. Some people can't appreciate innovation. If it's not broke don't fix it, but by all means, make something better. _________________ Daily Driver: 73 STD Beetle.

Dry-sump oil pump; he's probably supplying the cam bearings with the oil they need and scavenging the oil from the heads. _________________

If that's slop I want some and crappy carbs? I never herd 48's discribed as "crappy" before. _________________ 67 Bug w/2110

Brian may be bound to running carburettors in the class he races...FWIW. _________________

Fantastic! I knew someone eventually would enlighten us! Is there anymore information on these heads? I'm curious to see their design, and how much hp that setup can achieve! Its quite genius actually! |

Actually, I just did a little digging up online. There is quite a bit of information posted by Brian himself on the Cal-Look.com forums, where he goes by the username of 1649vw.
Its a 1679cc motor, putting out about 220hp. His car runs in the low 9s and can achieve 11,000rpm. There was also mention that he uses 5" Carrillo rods with a ratio of 1.84:1. Those heads are 2-valve, 2 spark plug heads. Very impressive!
There another user on that forum that was/is working on a 4 valve DOHC setup. Here are some shots.
Here is some data he posted in regards to the first flowbench tests on the 4 valve dohc heads.
Flow at 25" is:
1mm - 38,2
2mm - 70,9
3mm - 107,9
4mm - 144,1
5mm - 183,3
6mm - 210,7
7mm - 230,7
8mm - 245,8
9mm - 256,0
10mm - 263,7
11mm - 267,6
12mm - 272,2
All measurements above without manifold.
12 mm with a primitive manifold 285,4
13 mm with this manifold 289,1.
