The fuel injection heater boxes bolt on at the back to the pipes that come from the 2 cylinders on each side of the engine. The muffler hangs from the heater boxes and is supported by those 2 brackets that attach to the exhaust port of the rear cylinders.
Mine broke in half at one point and were welded back together but with the replacement Italian muffler I have it is hard to fit them.

Do you still have the brackets in your car? Did you remove them? Do you use another solution to support the heater boxes and muffler?

While in theory you need them as without them all the stress is on the flanges I have run my 78 & 79 for 15+ years without.

Depending on how ugly your roads are (lots of up and down bumps)...and how heavy your muffler is.....a nice heavy german OEM or a lighter aftermarket......you get a lot of loose exhaust studs sometimes. Ray.

I custom made some from flat steel I just gave it a zig-zag bend.

I am putting together my 79 FI exhaust, and I have the two brackets you are talking about. I just have them welded back together, but can only find where one of them goes. I searched for a diagram for the 79, but can't find it. ANYONE????

Got it, goes from exhaust flange to heater box to support the weight of the heater box.

Can someone post a photo of this part. Can't picture it, and my car doesn't have one.

Actually there are two, there is one for each Heater Box. Mine are being fixed -welded- but they are brakets in a Z shape. They are for helping to suspend the weight of the FI exhaust. They are different in shape because of the different diameter of the bends of the cast iron elbows of the exhaust. They attach to the outside of the front exhaust flange. And then they go down to the heater box and hold up the weight of the exhaust system. Send me your email and i can send you pics soon. KYLE in Erie CO

Now for the next question. My FI heater boxxes have a tab on them with a nut. It's on the side towards the engine, and I have no idea what attaches. Both boxxes has one. Anybody???
