Ever since I have owned this bus, the door buzzer has not worked. Actually, the PO removed it, as most bus owners seem to do because, well, it sounds like a dying cricket in a tin can. But I pulled a unit off the parts bus I had last year and finally hooked it up. I'm delighted. For now.

I'm sure in two weeks I'll be ready to rip it out and smash it with a framing hammer. Laughing

naaa. you don't want to pull it off! I bought my '76 westy about 4 years ago and was actually a little delighted that it worked.... to me it's a badge of courage! Although, I would describe the sound as a cricket who OD'd on steriods and is dying in a tin can Wink

I bought a bus once that had a working door buzzer. It was gone in about a week. I hated the sound of that F#^%$ thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the buzzers from '80s and '90s water cooled VWs could be substituted. They very annoying rather than extremely grating. I never missed having a door buzzer enough to find out though.

Stoner A is cylinders #2/4 B is #1/3 The plugged bowl is the throttle, the bong is the manifold

The buzzers on my '74 and '79 both work, never bothered me. I guess I just don't spend a whole lot of time with the door open and the keys in the ignition.

The buzzer on my '70 works. I think it's pretty neat. Brings back memories of the old bus my folks had in the 70s.

I replaced the original door buzzer in my '73 with the door chime relay from an '89 VW Fox. Plugged right in. Somewhat more pleasant than the dying cricket.

Door Buzzer? Mine doesn't have it. What's it for - to alert you to the door being open when setting off??

Where are the mechanics of it, I'd like to have a look and see if any of it remains.

I had an '89 Fox! The chimes sound like an icecream truck song or something.

Is the Door Buzzer located in the fuse panel? I may try to get mine working as well, so I can spend some time with VDubtech having the key in the ignition and the door open just to hear the sound.

Ice Cream Truck song is a good way to describe it. 3 separate ascending notes, then repeat.

It is #12 in the fuse panel. Here is a diagram from the Fox Bentley...

Here's a close-up of the relay...

And here is a pic of it installed - notice how the end has a grille and a speaker. Pretty easy to identify.

When the IAC engineer was out last year and put the key in the ignition for the test drive, the look on his face was priceless.

Mine works. Then again, everything except the gas heater is in working order.

The previous owner took pretty good care of it, for all the electrical shit to be working. Smile

I've got the doo-boo-bee triple note chime in my 91 GTI. I think I'll leave it there and stick with the dying cricket for the bus. I'd like to open one up to see what the mechanism inside looks like. Ratwell must have a pic somewhere...

It tells you your key is in the switch so there is a circuit there and yes your dome light ground switch makes it buzz. I pulled mine, 'stgawdawful cacophony.

What you are missing is the great feature that if you put a male spade connector on the yellow switched wire from your stereo and plug it into the buzzer socket #85 from the ignition switch you will have an accessory position.

You can listen to the stereo with the engine off as long as you leave the key in the ignition. As soon as you pull it out, stereo goes off.

It's pretty easy to convert the buzzer to buzz if you forget the headlights on as well.

In fact you can do both.

Note though if you have a big high amp stereo use this wire to trigger a relay as it's a low amp circuit.

that light will turn on when the door is open
can you help me there

go from +12 to a fuse (or from a fuse) to the bulb to the switch on the door (It makes ground)

I've done that trick on more than one VW.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you'd need to relay it for just a CD player. I think that they draw all their power for running, playing, etc through the same source as the memory (usually the red wire). I think the keyed wire (usually yellow) is simply a trigger to turn on with the key, sort of a relay wire in itself.
