Hi,

I am currently rebuilding my 1585cc single port engine. I am going to convert it to a 1776cc dual port engine. During disassembly I noticed the case to be dull.

I decided to sandpaper the case for a natural smooth alloy look.

It will take some time but it will finish with a smooth surface.

When you polish the case you close the pours and reduce the surface area.

In other words the engine will run hotter.

Thanks Glenn,

Do you know of a product I can use to at least make it look better?

A wire wheel could clean off the gunk while leaving the outside surface rough.

Triple 000 or higher steel wool always does the trick.

That finish won't last very long either.

That's aluminum and the Type 1 case is magnesium. It will start to darken in days.

I'd spend my time and effort on cleaning/painting everything above the case. Just a thorough cleaning makes a huge difference. If you paint the tin, fan shroud, intake, etc. it will look really nice.
