Has anyone actually installed a Porsche Transmission in a Vanagon?

I would like to see pictures, especially the front mount.

I had a road trip in my Vanagon (2.2 Subaru powered) and on hilly interstates, I really need another ratio (gear) between 3rd and 4th.
2.2 is 'happy' above 3200 rpm, drop down to 3100 on a moderate hill, and with a loaded camper, 3rd gear is the answer.. but its a big jump.

I'm just considering my options.

Tristar Eric has one in his Tristar Doka, mated to a Subie STI.

he has a big build thread on the Vortex.com site. search her and there you should get some posts.

There are 5sp vanagon transaxles floating around. Europe had them for gassers and would do what you are looking for. At the end of the day, probably cheaper and easier than fitting a porsche tranny to your van.

The Vanagon 5 speeds are 4 speeds with a 'granny low'.

The G-50 is nice, but expensive and it really is a project to fit it in.
The earlier Porsche boxes may fit easier, surely someone has a picture.

The 915 Porsche boxes are good after 1978 (case material change)
The later 930 boxes are known to be odd shifter feel, but that is primarily a linkage issue.
Either of these trans is what I am considering.

I can also swap out tires to change overall gearing, a bit shorter (smaller diameter) may be the low tech solution.

The european 5sp trannys are not necessarily 4+low. There are several different gear combos out there, the most sought after being one with a fairly tall 5th gear that drops freeway rpms quite a bit (i believe code AAP).

The brit vanagon forums (brickyard and club 80-90) often have used 5spd transaxles for around 500 pounds. Buy a used one, have AA transaxle rebuild it for you, and i bet you'd still be way ahead of a porsche tranny purchase and install. Just don't forget the 5sp shift linkage.

theres alot boxes to choose from, take a look see:

http://www.vw-bus-land.de/tips/t3getriebe.pdf

i spent quite a while searching the german, uk, and italian ebays lookin for a 5 speed and the logistics of getting everything coordinated and finding someone willing to sell it overseas was just too much of a pain in the ass...you might could try thomas at quality german auto in medina?, ca...i think thats right, id have to dig out the receipts to verify...but you can get a core with linkages, shifter and housing for somewheres around 800...then tack on another 1200 er so for the rebuild, depending on the damage, plus all the shipping...er maybe youll luck out and get 100k out of it as is...goin that route isnt without its risks though...2nd gear isnt easily had if i understand right and if you have damage to the pinion you could wind up with a pricey doorstop...

The syncro trannies are the 4+low, but the 5-speeds aren't. They are usually similar low an high gear to the 4 speeds, but closer ratio with a few exceptions including the AAP. The AAP drops top gear rpms by 10% over a typical 4-speed WBX tranny, but the difference isn't in the 5th gear, but rather the 4.57 r+p.

ii have a g50 box in my 3.2 bus, and a dk aircooled vanagon box in my 3.6 bus the g50 box needs the bulkhead area around the front mount cutting out and modifying to accomadate the longer porsche g50 box, it also needs new front gearbox mounts fabricating, new driveshafts with correct splines or adapters made up , what are expensive , and also the crossmember needs notching to enable the gear linkage to be able to work correctly. if you mount the gearbox lower so you dont have to notch chassis for gear linkage your engine will be so low you will have ground clearance issues, you will also need the 911 gear linkage what needs extending , and front gearshift area strengthening to enable it to work correctly i am looking into getting a dk box built with higher ratios from bears in uk with a lsd what can take 400bhp but its not cheap i just cant find a good enough condition box to rebuild

Just a couple of additional comments on the 5 speed 094. The AAP is desirable because of its tall 4.57:1 final drive, but it also does have a different 5th gear than most of the other 094s. .82:1 vs .77:1. The .77 5th gear is typically seen in the transmissions that have a 4.83:1 final drive. The taller final drive of the AAP combined with the shorter .82 5th makes the overall 5th gear ratio almost identical to the other 094s.

I can see how someone might describe the 094 as a 4 speed with low gear. It isn't set up like a Syncro, but 1st is a significantly lower ratio than the 1st gear in an 091. The ratios look something like this:

094:

4.11, 2.33, 1.46, 1.02, .77

091/1:

3.78, 2.06, 1.23, .85

All of the 094s aside from the AAP have a first that is almost too low to be useful in day to day driving. That leads some people to do a gentle start in 2nd with these trannys. I think that's why some people consider them to be a 4 speed with a low additional first. With gearing like that, and a balky 1st gear linkage, they are not really the hot tip for around town, but the third, fourth, and fifth gears are excellent highway gears, and really improve the road performance of a moderately powerful Vanagon.

I went with the G50 from a 91 Carrera. Mostly because the Vanagon 091 is not quite up to the job of standing up to the power and torque of the Subaru STI engine. I was lucky enough to meet Claer in Germany, he has been installing Porsche engines and transaxles into Vanagon's for years. I basically copied his design for the frame modification and mounting of the G50. It's not an easy mod. As Pokerbuzz mentioned, getting the transaxle in is just the beggining. The linkage has to be engineered to work as well.

I've included a few pics so you can see the extensive amount of cutting and fabrication for the G50.

I see what you're saying, but it hasn't been my experience. I have a stock DX 5-speed with the 5.43 r+p and with 27" tall tires which makes my gearing slightly shorter than the typical wbx 5-speed with stock tires. Fortunately I do have the .77 5th gear in it. First goes by fairly quickly, but is still quite useful. I wouldn't want to start in 2nd.

When looking at MPH with a typical WBX 4-speed gears and stock tires at 4,000 rpms you see:

16, 29, 48, 70

The typical 5-speed with what is being called a granny gear is:

14, 26, 40, 58, 72

I wouldn't call that first gear useless and wouldn't want to skip it, especially with taller tires and stock power.

Agreed on the goofy 1st gear position.

My GoWesty ACW 5 speed has those ratios but combined with a 4.57 R&P and its pretty good all around.

4.11, 2.33, 1.48, 1.02, .77

First is over in a hurry but its useful for very low speed poking along on dirt roads. Fourth gear is good from 35 to 65mph in regular daily usage. Its a better highway box than city just because of all the rowing to get from 1st to 4th, where most of my suburban driving gets done.
This gearset would be great with a 2.1 WBX.

We have an gearbox from Porsche 996 -05 with 6 gears and cable linkage.
This gearbox is the best of all Porsche gearbox if you shall mount it an vanagon.
All dimensions are smaller then the original vw gearbox.
And it´s very easy to arrange the cable shifter.
I shall load some picture later today.
But you see the gearbox and some projekt pictures here.
