I don't think any Beetles were ever positive ground. If I remember correctly, the only cars that were ever positive ground were either early Triumph or Austin Healey. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, though |

Also many American cars were positive ground until the mid to late 50's.
I am dinking with a 50 Desoto "Travel All" right now that was a positive ground 6 volt. Boy is that thing a toad! |

Well that explanes a few things. The ground cable to the battery is red and the first time I hooked the battery up I didn't pay atenttion to where the wire was going, just the red and hooked the battery up backwards. Then I started it up, it did start? But I think that might have fried the volt reg. Thanks for the input I will start over checking things out. |

Quite a few older British cars are positive ground. I used to have a '65 MGB in the early 70's and it was (+) ground... a real BITCH at the time to find an 8-track player that worked on (+) ground... oh, those were the days!
Think the Triumphs and Austin's were as well. _________________ - John

i was considering buying a plymouth cranbrook at one time, think it was a 51, and it had a positive ground on it, the guy said in part to ford and gm owning various patents there were differences with the plymouths, dunno if that's true or not, but the one other interesting part about it was, it was a 3 on the tree, but it was different. reverse was towards you and down, then you shifted up to first, down and forward to 2nd, and up to 3rd. while this is totally different than any 3speed i've ever owned, and i'm certain would get confusing since i'm so used to the other setup, it seems like it would be better cause top gear would keep the stick out of the way of the knees of whoever's riding bitch. i have no clue what relevance any of this has, probably none. _________________ --WolvenGoth

Keep in mind that some Beetles have the Speedo on a positive ground while the rest is negative ground. _________________ 74 super beetle AKA The Pirate.

This is not entirely true. All Beetles speedo is grounded like everything else. The Gen, Oil & T/Sig lights though are in an insulated housing and + is applied to the bulb bases and (-) is applied to the spade terminal on the bulb holder. This is still a negative ground system. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Crystal Lake, IL |
