They make a universal stereo box that fits most buggies, I found one in the classifieds here for $10 or so. _________________ Southside Buggistas VW & kit car club

| Ditch the CD player and get an Ipod or MP3 player. Mount and amp under the dash with an RCA to phono patch cable and your all set. Face it, buggy's aren't exactly secure vehicles and it would take some dirt bag about 3 seconds to rip a head unit out of your car. |

I agree with the last post - I went thru great pains to install and in dash cd player in the buggy and with the dual bazookas, couldn't hear it. Then installed a "quiet one" exhaust, still can barely hear it over the wind noise. When I freshen up the buggy in a year or two, will install a power amp under the seat and set it up for an MP3 player. I did that set up in my 65 Bug and it worked great - PLUS you can get a failry large amp for less that a low to mid level head unit... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

| Now you gys got me thinking. Was just about to buy a head unit for 150, but I already have the amps and subs that I want. How would you wire the system? Obviously the i-pod would go into the RCA input and if you had two amps then you would plug the output of one to the input of the other tying the system together? |

Some amps have a pass through function to run a different amp on the back side for the mid/highs or bass.
My head units has two rca outputs so I run two different amps.
I built a little metal bracket to support the unit under the dash since I didn't want to cut the dash up.
I made it from a piece of angle I had laying around and incorporated my switches into it also.
My MP3 player plugs into the front of the head unit through the front aux. port.
I already had the radio in our travel trailer and never used it but if I could do it over I would buy a newer unit that has all the cool Ipod and USB hookups instead.

Most amps have a wide enough gain range on the inputs that you can just run a Y adapter from the ear plug out put on the player to the RCA inputs on the amp. If you have multiple amps this might not work.
Set the gain on the amps so that you can use the volume control on the player.
If you have multiple amps a pre-amp might be needed. there are several pre-amp/ equalizers out there that would fit the bill nicely.
You can either run the remote trigger for the amp to a toggle switch then to keyed power/battery or just directly to keyed power. |

I went to a boat supply store. They have one that is molded plastic that you can mount under the dash. They also have it with a water proof cover that flips up. That is what I did with oter buggy. Looks clean and does the job. Sorry no pics, I will have to look for one. _________________ 73' Bug

I spent less than $40 on my setup (small amp, existing MP3 player, free surround-sound speakers, and misc connectors) and it plays great. I can hear it with our without the top on (not concert hall quality). Just another idea. Lots of picts here:
