Ok so I've got all the PVC pipe and 6 mil plastic sheet etc. etc. to put up what should be a pretty nice temporary paint booth. I've designed it so I can take it down and be able to re-use it for other projects. I'm going to have it cross ventilated to keep the over-spay/fumes down and me concious. What I'm wondering is, is it really necessary? I was talking to this guy the other day and he says I'm still going to have crap in my paint(dry overspray, dust, whatever), but im going to filter incoming air with furnace filters. My big gripe is freaking bugs. I get so wound up when there flappin' around in my fresh coat,..... so that was my initial motivation for the booth. So what say folks, in or out? Thanks, -K-

Keep you concious? I sure hope you are PLANNING on wearing a respirator of the right type....

I'd rather have lungs than shiney paint... bugs in it or not...

geT a couple of cans of YARD GUARD and spray the area just prior to painting... it helps alot...

Hey salt good luck on the painting, and yes you must keep the paint fumes out if not it will settle back down on your paint and cause it haze out(become dull). As far the bugs put some screen by the areas that you have as ventilations.

Hey Keifer, I am certainly going to wear a respirator. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. The "concious" statement was just one of my feeble attempts at humor. I do appreciate the concern though. I bought a dual cartridge AO Safety, it's NIOSH approved. Thanks for the encouragement E-boyz, actually my folks recently had some big windows replaced in their house, the big crank out casement type. So I've got all these killer screens, like 4'x2' in aluminum frames. I'm going to use furnace filters as well. Later, -K-

You ought to filter the exhaust too, to trap the larger paint particles and not p the neighbours off. Jeremy

Hey there Jeremy. I've already got that covered. I've got furnace filters for the exhaust side as well. Actually, my primary motivation for filtering the exhaust was concern of explosion hazard, so I'm placing filters at the exhaust port upstream of the furnace fan. Later, -K-

Yeah, Salty....I know your not a "turnip" I wasn't trying to bash you...
Your going about things in the right way... good guns, good paint, proper prep, atttention to detail...

I figured you probably were going to be using the proper protection as far as a respirator, I was clowning in a sense( lungs/vs shiney/bugs) but also was pointing out to any others(newbies) who may be reading this thread not to neglect wearing one ANYTIME your spraying.
Auto paint is very nasty stuff, especially the 2 pack products...

People....Read all MSDS warnings etc... follow instructions that is what they are there for.

the yard guard spray really does work to keep the flying bugs away...

I have sprayed alot of cars in "Makeshift" conditiins and had as good or better results than some of the old " rental" paint booths I've used.

The furnace/ fan deal sounds scary to me though... can you kill it off when your spraying????

all fans have an electric spark... In my old boths I think the closest a fan ever was to the both was maybe 4 feet or they were explosion proof.. make sure safety.. I mena.. thinners are flamable.. and in a gas state explosive.

Osha wont let me paint except in a prep station w/o a fresh air supply.. does that mean I do it that way.. no. I just wanted to point that out.

have fun. and the bad stuff.. (isocynates) wont be filterd by the exhuast filters. just the large paint particles... and that is only some of them. just so you know

Hey Keifer, I'm using the blower fan I pulled out of an old gas furnace with duct work hooked up to suck out the fumes. I'm keeping the filters ahead of the blower to hopefully reduce any volatile particulate accumulation. I know you weren't dissin' about the respirator. Thanks for the fedback, Later, -K-

Hey Keifer. Totally understandable. I went back and read over my post and that is what it sounded like. I'm going to put up the "booth" in the driveway, well away from any potential sources of ignition(Lord willing). Take it easy, -K-

Hey there E-boyz. Right on, I should be ready to paint, maybe the end of next week, so I'll try to get some shots of the old girl(with facelift) posted. I keep finding little flaws and I'm still paying my dues with the sanding block, but it's not long off now. Later, -K-

Hey fellas. Just wanted to add a quick note to this continuing saga. My project has take a detour so I haven't gotten to the paint yet. I had to get into the engine(she tweaked a valve spring so I yanked the head......). So anyway I appreciate all the advice and encouragement, I'll let you know when she gets painted. Later, -K-
