Hi, I just bought a 34 pict 3 carb for the 1600dp in my 1963 bug and the guy mentioned the hole in the throttle plate has been riveted closed. Why? Do I need to drill it back out to open it up? What is the benefit of having it closed? This is a stock 1600dp. Thanks!

usually people do this for a half assed fix if theyre using an 009 dist. it somewhat compensates for the flat spot hesitation when using a pict 34 with an 009.
personally, id drill it back out depending on what distributor youre running

Well, I am running an 009, and I've read all the tons of threads about a 34-3 and an 009, but the car has a 30 pict 3 on it now and it is struggling. So I should leave the hole shut and try it like that first? I am hoping to be able to get it properly tuned so that the 009 and the 34-3 can work together. Thanks.

hell it's worth a shot. i've never tried the rivit myself, usually i just swap the 009 out for a vaccum advance distributor. can always try it and see if it works, if not, drill it out and see what happens

with mine, i had the typical 009 with 34 pict problems, poor starting, no idle, really bad flat spot, 8 miles to the gallon etc... i fought it for a year before i took a junk dual vaccum distributor i had layin around in a parts engine and through that in. only half of the vaccum can worked and even then i noticed much improvement. i finally found a good vaccum can in a junkyard bug and picked that upfor 3 bucks, now its a hundred times better than it was. starts on a dime, great acceleration, better idle and 24 mpg. you might want to consider that option, i got about ten bucks total wrapped up in mine just in points and the junkyard vaccum can.

If the rivet has closed the hole up completely then drill out or try to knock out the 'center' of it. The hole just needs to be a bit smaller, not completely closed up.

This does work for running with 009 on German "DVDA flange # carbs" as they are the ones with the larger hole in the throttle plate. It allows you to tune/set the carb at idle properly ( otherwise it's common that people cannot get the idle down to 900... big brass screw screwed all the way in even.... with the hole closed up a bit the mixture and air volume screws can be set.

If you check your flange # against the chart you will see what distributor yours was matched too.

Even some new or used SVDA do not run well or have issues working with a carb that was originally supposed to match up with a DVDA and time 5 degrees retarded.

But naturally a vac distributor would be nice.
