|
|
I had to built my own tow bar a month before the Classic 09
to pack my truck with roof racks and also tow my Notch
i only had the time to powder coated one half
this is what I came up
6' feet long
2 piece tow bar for easy storage inside of my truck
I bought a bug tow bar for $10
bugs tow bars are 30 inches wide
Type 3 only needs 24 inches wide so I cut
ALL the welding area
and made it 24 inches wide and weld it again
and you can see I ADD the other half 2X2 square for easy slide
in the round tubing
needs to be exact 5 1/2 inches tall brackets support
smaller or longer would NOT WORK
and 3 1/4 apart inside dimentions
from San Diego to Irvine Ca. 65 to 70 mph
Ibjack on the T34 just checking few times on the freeway
ALL GOOD
We meet Rob Kings half way he saw it and like it too
90 degress turn on the gas station with the tail gate down and
a 9 feet 5 inches in my 6 foot bed bus roof rack hanging out and was far to touch the Notch
Jason saw me at the arrived at the Crown Plaza Hotel
No problems at ALL on or way back Jack make me buy a thick chain
and a bolt at Home Depot _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

Pedro, are you going to begin making these on a one time basis? If so, I want one and I will send you a bug tow bar to start with. I don't have your welding skills.

Very nice Pedro! What are the small round bar pieces for that are sticking out (3-4") on each side from the square tubing?
I went a different route for my tow bar set up. I did a super beetle style set up with tabs welded to the beam.
I really like what you've done here. You're a hell of a fabricator!! _________________ Justin |

Will it work with the Fuel Injected cars, since they have the fuel pump mounted to the backside of the beam to one side??

the one thing i wonder about is the pivoting action. a bug beam is round tubing where the bar mounts, however the type 3 beam is not. i wonder over the long term of going in and out of driveways and elevation changes, will it tear of the tow bar or the beam. _________________ Danny |

Before I hook it to my truck I raised the towbar
just to see how high can I lift
before HITS the Bottom of the Notch
I was
Good question
type 3 Beam is 3X3 square
NOT including top and bottom lip
ONLY where the towbar pivots
that's why the TWO plates are 3 1/4 space in between
the is a 1/4 spacing to allow that
NOW this is ME
I just wanted to hook it up and hit the FREEWAY
get to the VW SHOW and park on the street remove the towbar and drive the Notch IN
you should have ALL pack with food and gas
READY to GO
there's NO need to go to the wal-mart store or 7-11 etc.
JUST HOOK AND GO
again this is ME
AVOID driveways as many you can
Gizbob will TEST my towbar SOON
he already came to pick it up
I will know his opinion

If you mount in the 2 openings at the far end of the beam, then it will not work for FI cars. The fuel pump and filter are mounted to a plate on the right side opening. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

YES I search a 72 type 3 beam there's a plate welded on the right side
I already change the name of the topic _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic
