What upgrade options are available

Hello everybody,
I just got a 1982 Rabbit LS with an 1.7L Engine in it. I know it is not the greatest engine in the world but still curious what are my upgrade options and I am not looking for an extensive engine swap possibly swapping to an 1.8L 8V. I am more of a purist but only to the point using mostly VW bolt on upgrade parts. What are my options? I heard of using a throttle body from an Audi 4k or 5k? How about Cam, long-tube headers, possible Carb Upgrade. In my state I dont have to worry about emissions any longer so I like to see what I can get out of it.
