my bowden tube bracket is definitely part of the differential side cover, so it's '61 or newer. but my 1st gear is not synchronized, i need to come to a complete stop to put it into 1st, unlike with other gears which i can shift into while rolling. or perhaps i don't understand what synchronized means... thank you.

If the trans case is one piece (not 2 halves bolted together), looks so in your pictures, it is synchronized in all gears. If you have to come to complete stop to get first (you should anyway, no need for 1st gear unless leaving a dead stop IMOA), your 1st gear or syncros are worn or clutch not correctly adjusted

well i adjusted the clutch cable again, loosened it a bit, i think i may have had it too tight. took it for a test drive and all is fine but still need to stop to go into 1st.

but parking it in the garage, where it's quiet, when i press the clutch pedal, just past the free play, i hear a low rumbling sound as i push it to the floor. the sound stops when i release the pedal. this sound wasn't there before this adjustment. did i make it too loose? thank you

Sounds like a bearing going bad. If the TO bearing is good, then I would automatically go to the mainshaft bearings. Maybe you can get the car on a lift so that you can listen to it with a stethoscope.

thank you for your insights. i adjusted the clutch cable yet again and reduced the play down to about half an inch, maybe a bit less, and the noise went away. test drove it and shifting is fine, just that the clutch engagement point is now at about half to three quarter way up on the pedal release. before it was at less than half. otherwise, no difference.
